The Nigerian government announced on Wednesday the liberation of more than 300 hostages, including 163 people who were kidnapped from a single village in the west of the country last February.
This operation comes amid a rising kidnapping-for-ransom crisis in Nigeria, where armed groups are active in the northern and central regions of the country.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian presidency, Femi Adesina, reported that 308 Nigerian citizens were rescued from sporadic attacks in the Niger and Kwara states, noting that 163 of the freed individuals are from the village of Wuro, while 145 others were released from Niger State.
He explained that the hostages were freed from a location within the Kainji Lake National Park, in an operation involving the army, police, intelligence, and counter-terrorism agencies, which was described as "the largest rescue operation conducted in a single day," according to the spokesperson.
