The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned of the widening conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing that the continuation of fighting threatens the stability of the region and the world, and increases the suffering of civilians, calling for an immediate cessation of military actions and a return to the diplomatic path.
Warning of Escalation
Guterres stated, following his recent tour of the region, that the message he received during his meetings with the leaders of the countries was clear: the Middle East and the world "cannot bear more wars," stressing that military solutions will not end the crisis, and that diplomacy remains the only way to contain the escalation.
He confirmed that the widening circle of confrontations exacerbates humanitarian and economic crises, at a time when violence continues and civilian casualties are rising in several hotspots in the region.
Protecting Navigation
The Secretary-General called for the full restoration of international navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb and the surrounding areas, warning that the continuation of disturbances in these vital corridors threatens global trade and impacts energy markets and supply chains.
He pointed out that any further escalation would have repercussions that extend beyond the region, with rising pressures on the global economy and food security.
Gaza and Lebanon
The United Nations confirmed the continued deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip, despite the announcement of a ceasefire in October 2025, with ongoing casualties and continued restrictions on the entry of aid.
According to the latest data from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), 1,180 Palestinians were killed and 3,810 were injured during the period from October 10, 2025, to July 22, 2026, while displacement continues and humanitarian needs in the sector are increasing.
In Lebanon, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported ongoing hostilities in the south, alongside repeated violations of Security Council Resolution 1701, including breaches of Lebanese airspace.
The West Bank and Children
The United Nations warned of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the West Bank, with ongoing incursions, demolitions, and settler attacks, accompanied by displacement and restrictions on the movement of residents and land seizures.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that children have been the most affected by the widening conflict, noting that more than 4,000 children have been killed or injured in the past five months across six countries in the region, including over 2,500 children in Iran.
The organization renewed its call for all parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law, protect children, and respect ceasefire agreements.
Support for Syria
At the conclusion of his tour, Guterres called on the international community to enhance support for Syria in the recovery and reconstruction phase, considering that the country has an opportunity to emerge from the effects of years of war if the necessary international support is provided to enhance stability and rebuild institutions, and he called for the lifting of sanctions and support for reconstruction efforts.
