أعلن رئيس بنغلاديش محمد شهاب الدين، اليوم (الجمعة)، استقالته من منصبه، مرجعاً قراره إلى تدهور حالته الصحية بعد تشخيصه باضطراب عصبي يؤثر في الجهاز العصبي اللاإرادي، في تطور سياسي بارز يأتي قبل أشهر من الموعد المقرر لعودة رئيسة الوزراء السابقة الشيخة حسينة إلى البلاد.
وأوضح مكتب الرئيس، في بيان، أن شهاب الدين (76 عاماً) قرر التنحي بعدما أكدت الفحوص الطبية إصابته بمرض الاعتلال العصبي اللاإرادي (Autonomic Neuropathy)، وهو اضطراب قد يؤدي إلى فقدان الوعي بشكل مفاجئ.
وقال الرئيس المستقيل في بيان نقلته سكرتارية الرئاسة: «أظهرت الفحوص الطبية الأخيرة إصابتي بمرض الاعتلال العصبي اللاإرادي، وبسبب هذه الحالة أعاني أحياناً من فقدان مؤقت للوعي، لذلك قررت الاستقالة من منصبي».
مرحلة مضطربة
وتولى شهاب الدين منصب رئيس بنغلاديش في أبريل 2023، وهو منصب بروتوكولي إلى حد كبير، إلا أن فترة ولايته شهدت واحدة من أكثر المراحل اضطراباً في تاريخ البلاد الحديث، بعد الإطاحة بحكومة رئيسة الوزراء السابقة الشيخة حسينة عام 2024، إثر احتجاجات واسعة قادها طلاب انتهت بهروبها إلى الهند.
ويُعد شهاب الدين من المقربين سياسياً من الشيخة حسينة، ما جعل استقالته تمثل نهاية وجود أبرز حلفائها في المناصب السيادية، في وقت لا تزال فيه رابطة عوامي، الحزب الذي كانت تتزعمه، محظورة، بينما يواجه عدد كبير من قياداته وأعضائه السجن أو الاختباء منذ سقوط الحكومة.
من يتولى المنصب مؤقتاً؟
وبحسب البيان الرسمي، سيتولى رئيس البرلمان البنغلاديشي مهام رئيس الجمهورية بشكل مؤقت إلى حين انتخاب رئيس جديد، وفقاً للإجراءات الدستورية المعمول بها في البلاد.
صلاحيات الرئيس
ورغم أن رئيس الجمهورية يشغل منصب القائد الأعلى للقوات المسلحة، فإن السلطة التنفيذية في بنغلاديش تبقى بيد رئيس الوزراء ومجلس الوزراء، فيما يؤدي الرئيس مهام بروتوكولية ودستورية في الدولة التي يبلغ عدد سكانها نحو 173 مليون نسمة، وتعد من أكبر الدول ذات الأغلبية المسلمة في العالم.
وتأتي الاستقالة في وقت تشهد فيه بنغلاديش مرحلة سياسية دقيقة، مع استمرار تداعيات الأزمة التي أعقبت احتجاجات عام 2024، وترقب المشهد السياسي لاحتمال عودة الشيخة حسينة خلال الأشهر القادمة.
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin announced his resignation from office today (Friday), attributing his decision to the deterioration of his health after being diagnosed with a neurological disorder affecting the autonomic nervous system, in a significant political development coming months before the scheduled return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country.
The president's office clarified in a statement that Shahabuddin (76 years old) decided to step down after medical tests confirmed his diagnosis of autonomic neuropathy, a disorder that can lead to sudden loss of consciousness.
The resigning president stated in a statement relayed by the presidential secretariat: “Recent medical tests have shown that I am suffering from autonomic neuropathy, and due to this condition, I sometimes experience temporary loss of consciousness, so I have decided to resign from my position.”
Turbulent Phase
Shahabuddin assumed the presidency of Bangladesh in April 2023, a largely ceremonial position, yet his tenure has witnessed one of the most turbulent phases in the country’s modern history, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024, after widespread protests led by students that resulted in her fleeing to India.
Shahabuddin is considered politically close to Sheikh Hasina, making his resignation represent the end of the presence of her most prominent allies in sovereign positions, at a time when the Awami League, the party she led, remains banned, while many of its leaders and members face imprisonment or are in hiding since the fall of the government.
Who Will Temporarily Assume the Position?
According to the official statement, the Speaker of the Bangladeshi Parliament will temporarily assume the duties of the President until a new president is elected, in accordance with the constitutional procedures in place in the country.
Presidential Powers
Although the President serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, executive power in Bangladesh remains with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, while the President performs ceremonial and constitutional duties in a country with a population of approximately 173 million, making it one of the largest Muslim-majority nations in the world.
The resignation comes at a time when Bangladesh is experiencing a delicate political phase, with the ongoing repercussions of the crisis following the protests of 2024, and the political scene is anticipating the potential return of Sheikh Hasina in the coming months.
