After the end of the concert by artist Abdullah Al-Mana' last week at the Abadi Al-Johar Arena, the question that lingered in my mind was not: How did Abdullah Al-Mana' sing? But rather: How did he reach a stage named after Abadi Al-Johar with such a modest artistic performance?
This question does not detract from any artist's right to sing, but it puts the standard of selection under scrutiny. The stage associated with one of the most important voices in the history of Gulf music is not merely a venue for concerts; it is a symbol that is supposed to reflect an exceptional artistic level and provide the audience with an experience that matches the value carried by its name.
What was presented at the concert - in my opinion - did not align with this standard.
Abdullah Al-Mana's vocal abilities seemed limited, and their modesty was evident in the song "Ya Khoy." His stage presence was unable to lead the song or give it the weight it needed, while the details that make the difference between a singer performing a song and an artist possessing its tools were absent.
This issue does not concern Abdullah Al-Mana alone, nor even Abdulaziz Al-Duwaihi, who salvaged something from the night, but rather the message sent by these choices.
If a stage bearing the name Abadi Al-Johar welcomes such levels, what remains of the uniqueness of this theater? What distinguishes it from any other musical platform?
The criticism here is not directed at individuals as much as it is at the philosophy of selection. Because the artist naturally accepts the opportunity, while those who hold the right to choose bear the responsibility of maintaining the value and symbolism of the place.
Commercially, it is impossible to judge the success of the concert without details of fees and operations, but artistically, a person with genuine artistic taste does not need time to classify it as a concert with modest performance.
In the end, the issue is not about a concert that has ended, but rather a changing standard. When standards change, big names become mere attractions, while theaters gradually lose the role for which they were created; to be a hallmark of quality and a draw for the audience, not just a stop on the concert calendar.
What surprised me more than the level of the concert were the attempts that followed the evening to create a different impression of it from journalists or outsiders to the profession.
I read praises and saw illogical phrases, as if the goal was to convince the audience that they experienced an exceptional night, while what was presented on stage does not align - in my opinion - with this description.
The role of arts journalism is not to grant success certificates to something that did not succeed, nor to become an arm of public relations.
Its role is to document, to evaluate, and to say: here you succeeded, and here you failed. Because flattery may give the concert a glow for hours, but it harms the artistic scene for years.
It is unfortunate that some discourse in today's arts journalism no longer reviews the artistic work but rather reviews the reactions to it, merely repeating phrases like "an exceptional night," "great success," and "stunning presence," to the point that these phrases are written before the curtain is even raised.
Art does not need someone to create a halo around it, but rather someone to protect its standards.
