أعلنت الشرطة البريطانية، اليوم (الجمعة)، توجيه اتهامات إلى رجل يبلغ من العمر 39 عاماً للاشتباه في مساعدته جهاز الاستخبارات الإيراني، في أحدث قضية مرتبطة بطهران تُنظر بموجب قوانين الأمن القومي في المملكة المتحدة.
وقالت الشرطة إن المتهم، وحيد عبيري، وهو من مدينة ليفربول شمال إنجلترا، أُوقف ونُقل إلى مركز شرطة في وسط البلاد، فيما نفذت السلطات عمليات تفتيش في عدد من العناوين بمدينة برمنغهام وليفربول ضمن مجريات التحقيق.
وأكدت أجهزة الأمن البريطانية مراراً أن إيران تسعى إلى استخدام عناصر أو شبكات إجرامية لتنفيذ أنشطة عدائية داخل المملكة المتحدة.
كما شهدت البلاد، منذ اندلاع المواجهة العسكرية بين الولايات المتحدة وإيران، عدداً من الهجمات المعادية للسامية قالت السلطات إنها مرتبطة بطهران.
وفي إطار تشديد الإجراءات الأمنية، فرضت الحكومة البريطانية هذا الأسبوع حظراً على دعم الحرس الثوري الإيراني، مستندة إلى صلاحيات قانونية جديدة تستهدف الحد من استخدام جهات أو أفراد يعملون بالوكالة لصالح دول أجنبية.
وأكدت الشرطة، في بيان، أنها لم ترصد أي تهديد مباشر يستهدف أفراداً أو مجتمعات على خلفية القضية، لكنها أشارت إلى أنها أصبحت تتدخل بوتيرة أكبر لإحباط أنشطة يُشتبه في ارتباطها بأجهزة استخبارات أجنبية.
وقالت رئيسة شرطة مكافحة الإرهاب في لندن، هيلين فلاناغان، إن التحقيقات المتعلقة بالأمن القومي شهدت «زيادة كبيرة ومستدامة» خلال السنوات الأخيرة، ما يعكس تصاعد التحديات الأمنية التي تواجهها البلاد.
وتأتي هذه القضية بعد أسبوع من استدعاء الحكومة البريطانية أكبر دبلوماسي إيراني في لندن على خلفية حادثة طعن صحفي إيراني في العاصمة البريطانية، وهي القضية التي أُدين فيها مواطنان رومانيان.
من جانبها، كانت السفارة الإيرانية في لندن قد نفت في وقت سابق الاتهامات البريطانية، ووصفتها بأنها «ادعاءات لا أساس لها، ودوافعها سياسية وتتسم بالعدائية».
ومن المقرر أن يمثل المتهم أمام إحدى محاكم لندن في وقت لاحق من اليوم (الجمعة).
The British police announced today (Friday) that they have charged a 39-year-old man on suspicion of assisting the Iranian intelligence service, in the latest case related to Tehran being examined under national security laws in the United Kingdom.
The police stated that the accused, Wahid Abiri, who is from Liverpool in northern England, was arrested and transferred to a police station in the Midlands, while authorities conducted searches at several addresses in Birmingham and Liverpool as part of the investigation.
British security agencies have repeatedly confirmed that Iran seeks to use individuals or criminal networks to carry out hostile activities within the United Kingdom.
The country has also witnessed, since the outbreak of military confrontation between the United States and Iran, a number of anti-Semitic attacks that authorities say are linked to Tehran.
As part of tightening security measures, the British government this week imposed a ban on supporting the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, based on new legal powers aimed at limiting the use of entities or individuals acting on behalf of foreign countries.
The police confirmed in a statement that they have not detected any direct threat targeting individuals or communities in connection with the case, but noted that they are increasingly intervening to thwart activities suspected of being linked to foreign intelligence services.
London's head of counter-terrorism police, Helen Flanagan, stated that investigations related to national security have seen a "significant and sustained increase" in recent years, reflecting the rising security challenges facing the country.
This case comes a week after the British government summoned the top Iranian diplomat in London following the stabbing of an Iranian journalist in the British capital, a case in which two Romanian citizens were convicted.
For its part, the Iranian embassy in London had previously denied the British accusations, describing them as "baseless claims, politically motivated and hostile."
The accused is scheduled to appear before a court in London later today (Friday).
