حذّر رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، أمس (الأربعاء)، من اتساع مظاهر العنصرية والتعصب في بريطانيا خلال العقد الأخير، مؤكداً أن تفاقمها يهدد تماسك المجتمع ويدفع بعض الأشخاص إلى الابتعاد عن المشاركة في الحياة العامة.
وتأتي تصريحات ستارمر بعد يوم من نشر وكالة «رويترز» تقريراً أشار إلى مخاوف لدى بعض البريطانيين من الأقليات العرقية من عودة مظاهر العنصرية، في ظل الخطاب المناهض للمهاجرين والتركيز السياسي على الجريمة.
وجاءت هذه المخاوف عقب اضطرابات شهدتها البلاد، من بينها احتجاجات اندلعت في ساوثهامبتون بعد واقعة قتل، وأعمال شغب في بلفاست أعقبت هجوماً بسكين.
وخلال رده على أسئلة في البرلمان، قال ستارمر إن «العنصرية والتعصب متفشيان في كل مكان»، بعدما عبّر أحد النواب عن قلقه من تحول العنصرية والتحريض على العنف المرتبط بها إلى أمر اعتيادي، بما في ذلك من قبل بعض السياسيين.
وأضاف: «علينا التعامل مع هذه المشكلة، لأنها تمزق مجتمعاتنا، وينبغي على كل شخص يعمل في السياسة على أي مستوى في هذا البلد أن يندد بها».
وكان تقرير «رويترز»، الصادر أمس الأول (الثلاثاء)، قد نقل تحذيرات من نقابات وهيئات مهنية بشأن تزايد الإساءات العنصرية في أماكن العمل والحياة العامة، إلى جانب تصاعد التوتر عقب الاضطرابات التي شهدتها بريطانيا.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned yesterday (Wednesday) of the increasing manifestations of racism and intolerance in Britain over the past decade, emphasizing that their escalation threatens social cohesion and drives some individuals away from participating in public life.
Starmer's remarks came a day after Reuters published a report indicating concerns among some British ethnic minorities about the return of racist manifestations, amid anti-immigrant rhetoric and political focus on crime.
These concerns arose following disturbances in the country, including protests that erupted in Southampton after a murder incident, and riots in Belfast that followed a stabbing attack.
In response to questions in Parliament, Starmer stated that "racism and intolerance are pervasive everywhere," after one MP expressed concern that racism and the incitement to violence associated with it have become commonplace, including by some politicians.
He added: "We must address this issue, as it tears apart our communities, and everyone involved in politics at any level in this country should condemn it."
A report from Reuters, published the day before yesterday (Tuesday), conveyed warnings from unions and professional bodies regarding the increase in racial abuse in workplaces and public life, alongside rising tensions following the disturbances that occurred in Britain.
