مع تصاعد التهديدات الأمنية على الحدود الشرقية لأوروبا، تتحرك بروكسل لاحتواء القلق المتزايد في دول البلطيق، بعد سلسلة اختراقات جوية وحوادث طائرات مسيّرة أثارت مخاوف من اتساع نطاق المواجهة غير المباشرة مع روسيا.
تتوجه رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية أورسولا فون دير لاين إلى ليتوانيا غداً (الثلاثاء)، في زيارة تهدف إلى تأكيد الدعم الأوروبي وتعزيز التنسيق الدفاعي بين دول المنطقة وحلف الناتو.
ومن المقرر أن تلتقي فون دير لاين قادة ليتوانيا وإستونيا ولاتفيا، لتعزيز تنسيق الرد المشترك، بحسب ثلاثة مسؤولين مطلعين على الزيارة تحدثوا لمجلة «بوليتيكو» بشرط عدم كشف هوياتهم. كما سيتوجه مفوض الدفاع الأوروبي، أندريوس كوبيليوس، إلى ليتوانيا..
وأوضح أحد المسؤولين أن الزيارة تهدف، إلى جانب إظهار التضامن مع دول البلطيق، إلى تعزيز القدرات الدفاعية المشتركة عبر خطط التمويل والتنسيق الرئيسية التابعة للمفوضية الأوروبية.
وتأتي الزيارة في إطار مساعي الاتحاد الأوروبي لإظهار التضامن مع دول البلطيق، وتكثيف برامج التمويل والتعاون الدفاعي المشترك.
وشهدت المنطقة خلال الأسابيع الأخيرة سلسلة حوادث أمنية، إذ أطلقت ليتوانيا إنذاراً جوياً بعد رصد طائرة مسيّرة قرب حدودها مع بيلاروس، ما دفع الناتو إلى تفعيل مهمة مراقبة الأجواء. كما سقطت طائرتان مسيّرتان أوكرانيتان فوق منشأة نفطية في لاتفيا، بينما أسقطت طائرة تابعة للناتو مسيّرة في أجواء إستونيا.
وتصاعد القلق الأوروبي بعد اختراق مقاتلات روسية أجواء إستونيا، ودخول عشر مسيّرات إلى بولندا، إضافة إلى حادثة اختراق طائرة مسيّرة روسية المجال الجوي الروماني، ما دفع الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى إدانة ما وصفه بـ«الاستفزازات الروسية» على حدوده الشرقية.
وفي تطور لافت، أعلنت ليتوانيا اعتقال تسعة أشخاص بتهمة التخطيط لعمليات قتل وتخريب في أوروبا، متهمة الاستخبارات العسكرية الروسية بالوقوف وراءها. كما حذرت دول البلطيق من محاولات روسية لإثارة الانقسام بين أوكرانيا وحلفائها الأوروبيين عبر حملات تضليل مرتبطة بحوادث المسيّرات.
ويعمل الاتحاد الأوروبي حالياً على خطط لتعزيز الدفاعات الجوية للدول الواقعة على خطوط المواجهة، وسط تزايد المخاوف من توسع الأنشطة الروسية والهجمات الهجينة في أوروبا.
As security threats escalate on Europe's eastern borders, Brussels is moving to contain the growing concern in the Baltic states, following a series of air breaches and drone incidents that have raised fears of an expanding indirect confrontation with Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is heading to Lithuania tomorrow (Tuesday) for a visit aimed at reaffirming European support and enhancing defense coordination among the region's countries and NATO.
Von der Leyen is scheduled to meet with the leaders of Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia to strengthen the coordination of a joint response, according to three officials familiar with the visit who spoke to Politico on condition of anonymity. European Defense Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, will also travel to Lithuania.
One of the officials explained that the visit aims, in addition to demonstrating solidarity with the Baltic states, to enhance joint defense capabilities through funding plans and key coordination initiatives from the European Commission.
The visit comes as part of the European Union's efforts to show solidarity with the Baltic states and to intensify funding programs and joint defense cooperation.
In recent weeks, the region has witnessed a series of security incidents, as Lithuania issued an air alert after spotting a drone near its border with Belarus, prompting NATO to activate its air surveillance mission. Additionally, two Ukrainian drones fell over an oil facility in Latvia, while a NATO aircraft shot down a drone in Estonian airspace.
European concern has heightened following Russian fighter jets breaching Estonian airspace and the entry of ten drones into Poland, along with an incident involving a Russian drone violating Romanian airspace, prompting the European Union to condemn what it described as "Russian provocations" on its eastern borders.
In a notable development, Lithuania announced the arrest of nine individuals on charges of planning killings and sabotage in Europe, accusing Russian military intelligence of being behind it. The Baltic states have also warned of Russian attempts to sow division between Ukraine and its European allies through disinformation campaigns linked to drone incidents.
The European Union is currently working on plans to enhance air defenses for countries located on the front lines, amid growing concerns over the expansion of Russian activities and hybrid attacks in Europe.
