قدم وزير الدفاع اللاتفي أندريس سبرودس، استقالته أمس (الأحد)، على خلفية حادثة اختراق مسيّرة أوكرانية المجال الجوي اللاتفي في ليلة 7 مايو، وفقاً لما ذكرته هيئة الإذاعة والتلفزيون الحكومية اللاتفية.
وأعلن الوزير اللاتفي تحمله المسؤولية الكاملة عن عدم التصدي للمسيّرة، مؤكداً أنه يحترم دعوات المعارضة ويترك القرار النهائي للبرلمان «السايما».
وقال سبرودس في تصريحات تلفزيونية: «أتحمل المسؤولية الكاملة، وأحترم اقتراح المعارضة، وسأحترم قرار البرلمان بشأن استقالتي».
وكانت مسيّرتان يُعتقد أنهما أوكرانيتان قد دخلتا المجال الجوي اللاتفي قادمتين من الأراضي الروسية في ساعات الفجر الأولى من يوم 7 مايو، وسقطت إحداهما في منطقة «ريزكني» قرب منشأة تخزين نفط، ما أدى إلى اندلاع حريق في خزانات فارغة، بينما سقطت الثانية في منطقة أخرى، ولم يسفر الحادث عن إصابات بشرية.
يأتي هذا الحادث ضمن سلسلة من الاختراقات الجوية التي تعرضت لها دول البلطيق لاتفيا وليتوانيا خلال الأشهر الماضية، ورُجح أن المسيّرات الأوكرانية كانت موجهة أصلاً نحو أهداف روسية، لكنها انحرفت عن مسارها بسبب التدخل الإلكتروني الروسي أو أخطاء فنية.
وأثار الحادث انتقادات حادة لوزارة الدفاع اللاتفية بسبب تأخر الإنذار وفشل أنظمة الكشف الصوتي في اكتشاف المسيّرة مبكراً، ودعت أحزاب المعارضة فوراً إلى استقالة الوزير، فيما واجه سبرودس ضغطاً سياسياً كبيراً داخل الائتلاف الحاكم.
وتُعد لاتفيا عضواً في حلف شمال الأطلسي «الناتو»، ويثير أي اختراق لمجالها الجوي مخاوف أمنية إقليمية، خصوصاً في ظل الحرب الروسية الأوكرانية المستمرة.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds submitted his resignation yesterday (Sunday) following an incident involving a Ukrainian drone breaching Latvian airspace on the night of May 7, according to the Latvian public broadcasting authority.
The Latvian minister announced that he takes full responsibility for failing to respond to the drone, emphasizing that he respects the opposition's calls and leaves the final decision to the Saeima (parliament).
Spruds stated in television remarks: "I take full responsibility, I respect the opposition's proposal, and I will respect the parliament's decision regarding my resignation."
Two drones believed to be Ukrainian entered Latvian airspace coming from Russian territory in the early hours of May 7, with one crashing in the "Rēzekne" area near an oil storage facility, causing a fire in empty tanks, while the second crashed in another area, with no human injuries reported.
This incident is part of a series of airspace breaches that the Baltic states of Latvia and Lithuania have experienced in recent months, and it is believed that the Ukrainian drones were originally aimed at Russian targets but veered off course due to Russian electronic interference or technical errors.
The incident sparked sharp criticism of the Latvian Ministry of Defense due to the delayed alert and the failure of acoustic detection systems to identify the drone early, prompting opposition parties to immediately call for the minister's resignation, while Spruds faced significant political pressure within the ruling coalition.
Latvia is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and any breach of its airspace raises regional security concerns, especially amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.
