Forbes Middle East magazine has selected Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, President of the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), as one of the leaders of sustainability in the Middle East for the year 2026, in an international recognition of a developmental journey linked to supporting people, expanding educational opportunities, and enhancing economic and social empowerment, as well as strengthening the ability of communities to face developmental challenges.
This selection is an extension of a journey that began over four decades ago when the Arab Gulf Programme for Development was established in 1980 at the initiative of Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, may he rest in peace, to become one of the active Arab institutions in international developmental work, based on a vision that makes investment in people the foundation for sustainable development.
Since assuming the presidency of the program in 2020, Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal has continued to work on developing its developmental pathways and enhancing its international partnerships, alongside his responsibilities in several institutions concerned with education, human development, childhood care, and women's empowerment, including the Arab Open University, the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, and the Arab Women's Training and Research Center, in addition to his presidency of the Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development and the Supreme Committee for the Program's Investments.
His interest has also extended to the endowment sector, as he oversaw the establishment of the Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz Endowment System in 2020, which works through its developmental institutions and non-profit companies to support motherhood and childhood within the Kingdom, reaching approximately 50,000 mothers and children through its initiatives.
Throughout his journey, AGFUND has contributed to supporting 1,818 developmental projects in 172 countries, in collaboration with more than 500 partners, covering areas such as education, health, financial inclusion, technological empowerment, social development, and water and food security—fields that are directly related to improving living conditions and expanding opportunities for the less fortunate to access basic services.
As part of its future directions, the program's Board of Directors has approved its strategy until 2030, along with the approval of funding for 15 new developmental projects, reflecting the ongoing efforts to expand the scope of initiatives and respond to the changing needs of beneficiary communities.
Environmental and climate issues have also received attention within the program's activities, through supporting initiatives aimed at raising awareness about climate change, including the "Green in Arabic" platform launched in partnership with the Arab Network for Non-Governmental Organizations to disseminate environmental knowledge in Arabic.
The sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification "COP16," hosted in Riyadh, also witnessed the program announcing a global food security initiative aimed at supporting small farmers and mitigating the impacts of drought, desertification, and climate change on agricultural production, attracting more than 30 governmental, international, research, and private sector entities.
The selection of Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal in the Forbes list highlights an Arab developmental experience that has transcended the boundaries of traditional charitable work to build long-term institutions and partnerships, inspired by the legacy of Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, who made education, human empowerment, and the preservation of dignity fundamental pillars of his developmental work.
This presence also reflects the status of Saudi developmental institutions in the international scene and their ability to contribute to addressing issues that transcend geographical boundaries, affirming that the value of development is not measured solely by the size of projects, but by the impact they leave on people's lives and the future of communities.
