A recent medical study conducted in the Eastern Province revealed the presence of 297 molecular differences in the blood between two main types of heart attacks, while an experimental model based on three molecular indicators succeeded in distinguishing between them with an accuracy of 86.6% in the initial analysis, and 81.3% after more stringent internal validation.
Molecular Patterns
According to the study published in the journal "Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine," the sample included 246 individuals from two hospitals in Eastern Saudi Arabia, including 137 patients with heart attacks and 109 individuals as a comparison group. The patients were divided between 59 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction and 78 with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Researchers from Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University, King Fahd University Hospital in Khobar, along with international research entities, participated in the study. Blood samples were collected within two hours of diagnosing the heart attack, and the researchers analyzed stable molecules in the blood plasma known as "circular RNA," searching for molecular patterns that distinguish between the two types.
5 Indicators
The results showed statistically significant differences in the levels of 297 molecules, including five indicators that were elevated in patients with ST-elevation heart attacks, and four indicators that were more pronounced in the other type. After selecting three indicators, the model achieved a distinguishing ability of 86.6%, before recording 81.3% in the more stringent internal test.
The study concluded that the two types of heart attacks carry different molecular signatures in the blood, which may pave the way for the future development of tests to assist in classifying heart attacks and understanding their biological differences. The researchers confirmed that the discovered indicators are not currently an approved diagnostic test, and the accuracy results were achieved within the study's data, which does not necessarily mean the same rates will be achieved in other patients. The study recommended conducting independent tests on the indicators, expanding the samples and participating centers, and comparing them with current tests before moving towards clinical use.
