كشفت صحيفة «فاينانشال تايمز» أن واشنطن ألغت القمة التي كانت مقررة في العاصمة المجرية بين الرئيسين الأمريكي دونالد ترمب ونظيره الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، في أعقاب موقف روسيا الثابت من المطالب المتشددة بشأن أوكرانيا. وأفادت الصحيفة في تقرير لها، اليوم(الجمعة)، بأن القرار جاء بعد اتصال هاتفي متوتر بين كبار دبلوماسيي البلدين.
وعزت سبب تعليق خطط عقد القمة في بودابست هذا الشهر، إلى تمسك موسكو بمطالب من بينها أن تتنازل أوكرانيا عن المزيد من الأراضي كشرط لوقف إطلاق النار.
وبعد أيام من اتفاق ترمب وبوتين على الاجتماع في العاصمة المجرية لمناقشة سبل إنهاء الحرب الروسية في أوكرانيا، أرسلت وزارة الخارجية الروسية مذكرة إلى واشنطن تؤكد فيها على نفس المطالب لمعالجة ما يسميه الرئيس بوتين «الأسباب الجذرية» لحربه على أوكرانيا، والتي تشمل تنازلات حدودية وخفضا كبيرا للقوات المسلحة الأوكرانية وضمانات بعدم انضمام كييف إلى حلف شمال الأطلسي، وفقا للصحيفة.
وأضاف تقرير «فاينانشال تايمز» أن الولايات المتحدة ألغت القمة، عقب اتصال هاتفي بين وزير الخارجية الروسي سيرغي لافروف ونظيره الأمريكي ماركو روبيو، إذ قال روبيو عقب الاتصال لترمب إن موسكو لا تبدي أي استعداد للتفاوض.
وكان روبيو أفاد بأن الولايات المتحدة ما زالت تريد لقاء روسيا والتحاور معها، على الرغم من فرض الإدارة الأمريكية قبيل ساعات عقوبات جديدة على موسكو بسبب حربها في أوكرانيا.
وقال للصحفيين، مساء الأربعاء «ما زلنا نرغب في لقاء الروس.. سنظل دائما مهتمين بالحوار إذا كانت هناك إمكانية لتحقيق السلام».
وكان الرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي، قال هذا الشهر إنه في حين أن أوكرانيا مستعدة لمحادثات السلام، فإنها لن تسحب قواتها من أراض إضافية أولا مثلما طالبت موسكو.
من جانبه، أكد وزير الخارجية المجري بيتر سزيتارتو، أن الولايات المتحدة لم تتراجع عن عقد قمة بودابست للسلام. وقال في تغريدة على حسابه في منصة «إكس»: «أخبار سيئة للوبي المؤيد للحرب، وأخبار سارة لمن يريدون السلام. بعد لقائي مع وزير الخارجية الأمريكي، اتضح أن الولايات المتحدة لم تتراجع عن عقد قمة بودابست للسلام».
وشدد على أن التحضيرات للقمة ما زالت جارية، موضحاً أن النية موجودة، لكن البحث جار حول التوقيت فقط.
The "Financial Times" revealed that Washington has canceled the summit that was scheduled to take place in the Hungarian capital between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, following Russia's firm stance on the stringent demands regarding Ukraine. The newspaper reported today (Friday) that the decision came after a tense phone call between senior diplomats from both countries.
It attributed the reason for suspending plans for the summit in Budapest this month to Moscow's insistence on demands, including that Ukraine cede more territory as a condition for a ceasefire.
Days after Trump and Putin agreed to meet in the Hungarian capital to discuss ways to end the Russian war in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry sent a note to Washington reiterating the same demands to address what President Putin calls the "root causes" of his war on Ukraine, which include territorial concessions, a significant reduction of Ukrainian armed forces, and guarantees that Kyiv will not join NATO, according to the newspaper.
The "Financial Times" report added that the United States canceled the summit following a phone call between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his American counterpart Marco Rubio, during which Rubio told Trump after the call that Moscow showed no willingness to negotiate.
Rubio stated that the United States still wants to meet and engage in dialogue with Russia, despite the U.S. administration imposing new sanctions on Moscow just hours before due to its war in Ukraine.
He told reporters on Wednesday evening, "We still want to meet with the Russians... We will always be interested in dialogue if there is a possibility of achieving peace."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this month that while Ukraine is ready for peace talks, it will not withdraw its forces from additional territories first, as Moscow has demanded.
For his part, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed that the United States has not backed down from holding the Budapest peace summit. He stated in a tweet on his account on the "X" platform: "Bad news for the war-supporting lobby, and good news for those who want peace. After my meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, it became clear that the United States has not backed down from holding the Budapest peace summit."
He emphasized that preparations for the summit are still ongoing, clarifying that the intention is there, but discussions are ongoing regarding the timing only.
