أكد الجيش الأمريكي، اليوم (الأربعاء)، إن قرار عدم استبدال القوات الأمريكية المغادرة من رومانيا لا يعني انسحاباً أمريكياً من أوروبا. وذلك، بعدما ذكرت وزارة الدفاع الرومانية إن واشنطن أبلغتها بتقليص وجودها العسكري بأوروبا الشرقية.
عودة الجيش الأمريكي لوحدته
وأوضح الجيش الأمريكي، في بيان من مقره الأوروبي، أن اللواء القتالي الثاني من الفرقة 101 المحمولة جواً سيعود إلى وحدته الأم في ولاية كنتاكي وفق الجدول المقرر، ومن دون استبدال، موضحاً أن هذا ليس انسحاباً أمريكياً من أوروبا، ولا إشارة إلى تراجع الالتزام تجاه حلف الناتو، أو المادة الخامسة. ولفت الجيش الأمريكي إلى أن هذا التعديل في التموضع العسكري لن يغير البيئة الأمنية في أوروبا.
من جهته، قال السفير الأمريكي لدى حلف الناتو ماثيو ويتكر إن الحضور الأمريكي القوي والالتزام الدائم تجاه أوروبا لا يزال راسخاً، بما في ذلك الدعم لمهمة الحارس الشرقي، مشدداً على أن الولايات المتحدة لا تزال ملتزمة بأمن رومانيا.
ولفت إلى إن الحلفاء مثل رومانيا يظهرون قدرة ومسؤولية متزايدة، مشدداً بالقول: «على مدى أكثر من 20 عاماً كحليف في الناتو، تعاونت رومانيا باستمرار مع الولايات المتحدة لتحقيق أهدافنا الدفاعية المشتركة. هذه الشراكة لا تزال أقوى من أي وقت مضى».
التزام أمريكي لرومانيا
وأضاف ويتكر إن الولايات المتحدة لديها التزام تجاه رومانيا كـ«حليف موثوق في الناتو، وشريك استراتيجي حيوي، وقوة دافعة للأمن في أوروبا».
ويُقدر عدد القوات الأمريكية المنتشرة في أوروبا بنحو 80 ألف جندي.
وكانت وزارة الدفاع الرومانية قد قالت في وقت سابق اليوم، إن الولايات المتحدة أبلغت حلفاءها بأنها قررت تقليص وجودها العسكري على الجناح الشرقي لحلف الناتو.
The U.S. military confirmed today (Wednesday) that the decision not to replace departing American troops from Romania does not indicate a U.S. withdrawal from Europe. This comes after the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that Washington informed it of a reduction in its military presence in Eastern Europe.
Return of the U.S. Army to Its Unit
The U.S. military clarified in a statement from its European headquarters that the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division will return to its home station in Kentucky as scheduled, without replacement, emphasizing that this is not a U.S. withdrawal from Europe, nor a sign of a reduction in commitment to NATO or Article Five. The U.S. military pointed out that this adjustment in military positioning will not change the security environment in Europe.
For his part, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that the strong American presence and enduring commitment to Europe remain steadfast, including support for the Eastern Flank mission, stressing that the United States remains committed to the security of Romania.
He noted that allies like Romania are demonstrating increasing capability and responsibility, emphasizing: "For over 20 years as a NATO ally, Romania has consistently worked with the United States to achieve our shared defense goals. This partnership is stronger than ever."
American Commitment to Romania
Whitaker added that the United States has a commitment to Romania as a "reliable NATO ally, a vital strategic partner, and a driving force for security in Europe."
The number of U.S. troops deployed in Europe is estimated to be around 80,000 soldiers.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense had stated earlier today that the United States informed its allies that it has decided to reduce its military presence on NATO's eastern flank.
