أعلن رئيس الوزراء المجري فيكتور أوربان اليوم (الجمعة) أن بلاده ستستضيف قمة مرتقبة بين الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب ونظيره الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، تهدف إلى بحث سبل إنهاء الحرب في أوكرانيا.
وجاء إعلان أوربان بعد يوم من تصريح ترمب الذي أكد أنه سيلتقي بوتين في العاصمة المجرية بودابست خلال الأسبوعين القادمين، في اجتماع سيكون الثاني بينهما خلال العام الحالي. وأوضح ترمب أن اللقاء يأتي قبل يوم واحد فقط من اجتماعه مع الرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي في البيت الأبيض.
وقال أوربان (الذي يعد أحد أقرب حلفاء ترمب في أوروبا وأكثر القادة الأوروبيين قربًا من الكرملين) في حديث للإذاعة الرسمية المجرية: «بودابست هي المكان الوحيد تقريبًا في أوروبا الذي يمكن أن يعقد فيه مثل هذا الاجتماع، لأننا الدولة الوحيدة التي تدافع عن السلام باستمرار وعلانية منذ 3 سنوات».
وأشار أوربان إلى أن اعتراض المجر المتواصل على تزويد أوكرانيا بالمساعدات العسكرية والمالية الغربية، كان أحد الأسباب التي جعلت بودابست مكانًا مقبولًا من الجانبين لعقد المحادثات.
يذكر أن المجر رفضت منذ الغزو الروسي لأوكرانيا عام 2022 السماح بمرور الأسلحة عبر أراضيها إلى كييف، كما هدد أوربان مرارًا بعرقلة العقوبات الأوروبية ضد موسكو، ووقف حزم تمويل دعم أوكرانيا داخل الاتحاد الأوروبي، ما جعله الوجه الأوروبي الأكثر تمردًا على النهج الغربي الموحد ضد روسيا.
وكان ترمب قد عقد أول قمة له مع بوتين منذ عودته إلى البيت الأبيض في 15 أغسطس الماضي في أنكوراج بولاية ألاسكا، وناقش خلالها آفاق التوصل إلى تسوية شاملة للصراع، فيما يتوقع أن تشكل قمة بودابست محطة محورية جديدة في مسار الجهود الدبلوماسية لإنهاء الحرب.
وفي ظل تكثف الاتصالات بين موسكو وواشنطن، إذ أجريت 8 مكالمات هاتفية بين الجانبين خلال الأشهر الثمانية الماضية وفقًا لتقارير «سي إن إن»، يرى مراقبون أن القمة القادمة قد تمهد لصفقة مفاجئة تغيّر ملامح الصراع في أوروبا الشرقية.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced today (Friday) that his country will host an anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at discussing ways to end the war in Ukraine.
The announcement from Orbán came a day after Trump stated that he would meet with Putin in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, within the next two weeks, in a meeting that will be their second this year. Trump clarified that the meeting comes just one day before his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Orbán (who is considered one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe and one of the European leaders most aligned with the Kremlin) said in an interview with Hungarian state radio: “Budapest is almost the only place in Europe where such a meeting can be held, because we are the only country that has consistently and openly defended peace for the past three years.”
Orbán pointed out that Hungary's ongoing objection to providing Ukraine with Western military and financial aid was one of the reasons that made Budapest an acceptable location for both sides to hold talks.
It is worth noting that Hungary has refused since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 to allow the passage of weapons through its territory to Kyiv, and Orbán has repeatedly threatened to obstruct European sanctions against Moscow and halt funding packages supporting Ukraine within the European Union, making him the most rebellious European face against the unified Western approach towards Russia.
Trump held his first summit with Putin since returning to the White House on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska, where they discussed the prospects for reaching a comprehensive settlement to the conflict, while the Budapest summit is expected to mark a new pivotal point in the diplomatic efforts to end the war.
As communications between Moscow and Washington intensify, with 8 phone calls between the two sides conducted over the past eight months according to reports from CNN, observers believe that the upcoming summit could pave the way for a surprising deal that changes the dynamics of the conflict in Eastern Europe.
