The head of the German foreign intelligence service, Martin Yaeger, warned that Russia poses a direct threat, emphasizing that the current "cold peace" between Moscow and the European Union could turn into a "heated confrontation" at any moment.
In a speech before German lawmakers in Berlin today (Monday), the head of the German foreign intelligence service (BND) announced that Russia is determined to expand its influence westward towards Europe.
Direct military confrontation
Yaeger, who took over the leadership of the agency last month, stated: "To achieve this goal, Russia will not hesitate to engage in direct military confrontation with NATO if necessary."
He was joined by leaders of Germany's domestic and military intelligence agencies. Although they mentioned other threats facing Germany, such as political and religious extremism, it was Russia that dominated their remarks.
Yaeger, who previously served as the German ambassador in Kyiv, reiterated what other intelligence chiefs have said, confirming that Russia's ambitions are not limited to the war in Ukraine.
We will not stand idly by
He stressed: "We should not sit idly by and assume that a potential Russian attack will occur in 2029 at the earliest," referring to a previous intelligence assessment. He added: "We are already under attack." He believes that Moscow seems determined to undermine NATO and destabilize European democracies, according to his statements.
He pointed out that the means used by Moscow are well known, including: attempts to manipulate elections and public opinion, propaganda, provocations, disinformation, espionage, sabotage, violating airspace with drones and fighter jets, hired killings, and persecuting opposition figures residing abroad.
For his part, the new head of the German domestic intelligence agency (BfV), Sinan Selin, spoke about several incidents that were monitored last September, such as drone incursions, jamming of the Global Positioning System (GPS), and Russian fighter jets breaching NATO airspace. He considered these incidents to confirm the scope of the threat.
He said: Although investigations are still ongoing, the likelihood of an attack from any hybrid entity in the airspace has become clear. He added: There is no doubt that Russia is aggressive and offensive and is increasingly moving towards escalation.
