The French presidency announced on Sunday evening the formation of Prime Minister-designate Sébastien Lecornu's government, which included the reappointment of Roland Lescure - a close ally of President Emmanuel Macron - as Minister of Finance.
The new government is composed of 34 ministers, with the Interior Ministry granted to Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez, while the Ministry of the Interior was given to Gerald Darmanin. Rachida Dati retained her position as Minister of Culture, and Jean-Noël Barrot kept his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The right-wing party "Les Républicains" quickly announced the expulsion of several of its members chosen by Lecornu for his new government.
Lecornu's government, which lasted only 14 hours in its previous formation, is under intense pressure to pass the 2026 budget through a deeply divided parliament.
Following the announcement of his new government, Lecornu stated that the new cabinet was formed to ensure that the country has a budget before the end of the year.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who was reappointed on Friday just days after resigning, faces a race against time to present the 2026 budget bill by Monday to the Council of Ministers, and on the same day to parliament, while his opponents from the left and far-right have vowed to bring down his new government.
President Emmanuel Macron reappointed his strong supporter just days after Lecornu's resignation, justifying his decision by stating that there is no way to form a government capable of drafting a budget that reduces spending for 2026 through a deeply divided parliament.
Lecornu first took over the government for 27 days, making it the shortest term in modern French history, and nothing guarantees that he will last longer this time. According to the French newspaper "Le Figaro," Macron's decision to reappoint him has angered some of his fiercest opponents, who say that the only way out of the worst political crisis in France in decades is for the president to call for new legislative elections or resign.
