After being targeted by a swarm of suicide drones launched by the Rapid Support Forces in the early hours of this morning (Sunday), calm has returned to the city of Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in western Sudan.
A military source reported that the Rapid Support Forces launched an attack with 32 suicide drones, targeting various sites and objectives in the city of Al-Obeid, before being engaged by the ground defenses of the Sudanese army.
The source confirmed that this attack is considered the largest witnessed by the city of Al-Obeid, after it became a center for command and control for the movements of the army and supporting forces in the Kordofan and Darfur states.
The city of Al-Obeid has been targeted multiple times recently by drone attacks from the Rapid Support Forces, aiming at military and civilian facilities in the city, which is controlled by the army.
It is worth noting that the Rapid Support Forces have recently made battlefield advances in some cities of North and South Kordofan, and have strengthened their control in Darfur. Meanwhile, the army has taken control of the northern, central, and eastern states of the country. The Rapid Support Forces attempted to resume the siege that the army broke on Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, at the beginning of this year.
The ongoing war since mid-April 2023 between the two military forces has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 12 million people, causing a humanitarian situation that the United Nations considers the worst hunger and displacement crisis in the world.
