عُثر على سفير جنوب أفريقيا لدى فرنسا، نكوسيناثي إيمانويل متيتوا، ميتاً في أسفل فندق في بورت مايو غرب باريس، وفقاً لما ذكرته صحيفة «لو باريزيان»، أمس (الثلاثاء).
وأعلنت النيابة الفرنسية أن زوجته كانت قد أبلغت عن اختفائه بعدما وصلتها منه رسالة «مقلقة» عبر الهاتف.
وأظهرت تقارير صحفية في وقت سابق أن السفير نكوسيناثي إيمانويل متيتوا (58 عاماً) لقي مصرعه بعد «سقوطه من الطابق الـ22 في الفندق»، وهو مبنى شاهق يقع في منطقة بورت مايو غربي العاصمة الفرنسية.
من جانبها، أوضحت النيابة الفرنسية أنها عثرت على جثمان السفير أسفل البرج مباشرة، كما أكدت أن له غرفة محجوزة في الطابق الـ22 بالفندق، وأن النافذة المحكمة الإغلاق في هذه الغرفة قد «فُتحت عنوة».
وقالت النيابة إن أحد قضاة التحقيق تفقد موقع الحادث، وقد أوكلت مهمة التحقيق إلى وحدة مكافحة الجرائم ضد الأفراد.
وبينما لم تكشف النيابة عن مزيد من التفاصيل، نقلت وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية عن مصادر وصفتها بالمطلعة أن السفير «ربما أقدم على الانتحار»، لأنه كان يعاني الاكتئاب حسب ادعائها.
وكان السفير وزيراً للفنون والثقافة في جنوب أفريقيا بين 2014 و2019، ووزيراً للرياضة بين 2019 و2023.
وقد نعاه رئيس جنوب أفريقيا سيريل رامافوزا، إذ قال في بيان للرئاسة إنه حزين لوفاة متيتوا «في ظروف مأساوية في العاصمة الفرنسية».
The South African ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Metetwa, was found dead at the bottom of a hotel in Port Maillot, west of Paris, according to the newspaper "Le Parisien," yesterday (Tuesday).
The French prosecutor's office announced that his wife had reported him missing after receiving a "worrying" message from him via phone.
Earlier reports indicated that Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Metetwa (58 years old) died after "falling from the 22nd floor of the hotel," which is a tall building located in the Port Maillot area west of the French capital.
For its part, the French prosecutor's office clarified that they found the ambassador's body directly beneath the tower, and confirmed that he had a room booked on the 22nd floor of the hotel, and that the sealed window in this room had been "forced open."
The prosecutor's office stated that one of the investigating judges inspected the scene of the incident, and the investigation has been assigned to the unit combating crimes against individuals.
While the prosecutor's office did not disclose further details, the French press agency reported from sources described as knowledgeable that the ambassador "may have committed suicide," as he was allegedly suffering from depression.
The ambassador served as the Minister of Arts and Culture in South Africa from 2014 to 2019, and as the Minister of Sport from 2019 to 2023.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences, stating in a presidential statement that he is saddened by Metetwa's death "under tragic circumstances in the French capital."
