كشفت وثيقة قضائية أمريكية، اليوم (الأربعاء)، عثور عملاء من مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي الأمريكي (FBI) على وثائق تحمل طابع السرية خلال عملية تفتيش نُفذت الشهر الماضي في مكتب مستشار الأمن القومي السابق جون بولتون، وسط العاصمة واشنطن.
وأفادت مجلة «بوليتيكو»، أن الوثائق التي جُمعت خلال عملية التفتيش بتاريخ 22 أغسطس الماضي شملت مواد تتعلق بـ«أسلحة دمار شامل»، وبعثة الولايات المتحدة لدى الأمم المتحدة، وسجلات مرتبطة بالاتصالات الاستراتيجية للحكومة الأمريكية.
ملفات سرية
ولم يحدد الجرد، الذي أعده أحد عملاء مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي، عدد الوثائق التي يُعتقد أنها سرية، لكنه تضمن مجموعات أو ملفات عدة معنونة بعبارة «سري»، وصفحات أخرى مختوم عليها «سري للغاية».
وحُجبت من الجرد هوية إحدى المجموعات المصنفة على أنها «سرية»، وذلك في المستند المودع مطلع الشهر الجاري لدى محكمة فيدرالية في واشنطن، كما نفذ عملاء مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي بناء على مذكرة قضائية، تفتيش منزل بولتون بمدينة بيثيسدا في ولاية ماريلاند.
ملفات تجسس
وأظهر الجرد الخاص بتلك العملية عدم وجود أي مؤشر على العثور على وثائق سرية، غير أن العملاء، في كلتا الحالتين، صادروا أجهزة حاسوب وأجهزة إلكترونية أخرى لم يُكشف عن محتواها.
ووفقاً لمذكرتي التفتيش، فإن عملاء مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي كانوا يسعون للحصول على أدلة مرتبطة بثلاث جرائم جنائية، من بينها جمع أو نقل أو فقدان معلومات تخص الدفاع الوطني في انتهاك لقانون التجسس، إضافة إلى حيازة وثائق سرية دون تصريح.
ووافقت وزارة العدل على نشر نسخ منقحة من الجرد ومذكرة التفتيش والإفادة الخطية المرافقة، لكنها رفضت كشف المعلومات الكامل بدعوى حماية سير تحقيق يتعلق بالأمن القومي.
دعوى قضائية سابقة
وكان بولتون قد واجه، في الولاية الأولى للرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، دعوى قضائية اتهمته بإدراج معلومات سرية في كتاب أصدره عقب مغادرته إدارة ترمب. وقد حذّره حينها قاضٍ فيدرالي علناً من أن تصرفات المسؤول السابق في البيت الأبيض ربما شكّلت انتهاكاً جنائياً.
إلا أن تحقيق وزارة العدل لم يُسفر عن توجيه اتهامات، وتم إغلاق الملف في عهد إدارة الرئيس جو بايدن عام 2021.
ولم يتضح متى أُعيد فتح التحقيق، غير أن المستندات القضائية تشير إلى أن محققي الوكالة خلصوا إلى أن البريد الإلكتروني الخاص ببولتون على خدمة (AOL) تعرض للاختراق من جهة أجنبية، من دون أن تتضح تفاصيل عملية الاختراق أو كيفية علم السلطات الأمريكية بها.
A U.S. court document revealed today (Wednesday) that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found classified documents during a search conducted last month at the office of former National Security Advisor John Bolton in downtown Washington, D.C.
Politico magazine reported that the documents collected during the search on August 22 included materials related to "weapons of mass destruction," the U.S. mission to the United Nations, and records linked to the strategic communications of the U.S. government.
Classified Files
The inventory prepared by an FBI agent did not specify the number of documents believed to be classified, but it included several groups or files labeled "Confidential," as well as other pages marked "Top Secret."
One of the groups classified as "Confidential" was withheld from the inventory, which was submitted earlier this month to a federal court in Washington. Additionally, FBI agents executed a search warrant at Bolton's home in Bethesda, Maryland.
Espionage Files
The inventory from that operation showed no indication of finding classified documents; however, agents in both cases seized computers and other electronic devices whose contents were not disclosed.
According to the search warrants, FBI agents were seeking evidence related to three criminal offenses, including the collection, transmission, or loss of information related to national defense in violation of the Espionage Act, as well as the possession of classified documents without authorization.
The Department of Justice agreed to release redacted copies of the inventory and the search warrant along with the accompanying affidavit, but it refused to disclose complete information citing the need to protect the integrity of a national security investigation.
Previous Lawsuit
Bolton faced a lawsuit during the first term of President Donald Trump, accusing him of including classified information in a book he published after leaving the Trump administration. At that time, a federal judge publicly warned him that the actions of the former White House official might constitute a criminal violation.
However, the Department of Justice's investigation did not result in any charges, and the case was closed during President Joe Biden's administration in 2021.
It is unclear when the investigation was reopened, but court documents indicate that agency investigators concluded that Bolton's email on the (AOL) service had been hacked by a foreign entity, although details of the hacking process or how U.S. authorities became aware of it remain unclear.
