ويعود أصل التسمية إلى عام 1789 حين عُرفت الوزارة بـ «وزارة الحرب»، قبل أن تتحول إلى «وزارة الدفاع» عام 1947 في محاولة لإضفاء طابع أكثر سلمية بعد النزاعات العالمية الكبرى. لكن ترمب يرى أن التغيير السابق ساهم في ما وصفه بـ «إخفاقات متتالية» للسياسة الدفاعية الأمريكية.
القرار أثار اعتراضات واسعة داخل الكونغرس، إذ شدد خبراء قانونيون على أن سلطة تغيير الاسم رسميًا تعود إلى المؤسسة التشريعية لا إلى الرئيس وحده. كما حذّر الديمقراطيون من أن الخطوة ليست سوى مناورة سياسية مكلفة، مشيرين إلى أن كلفة إعادة الهيكلة والهوية المؤسسية قد تتجاوز مليار دولار أمريكي.
