استقالت نائبة رئيس الوزراء البريطاني، أنجيلا راينر، اليوم (الجمعة)، بعد اعترافها بأنها لم تدفع ضريبة عقارية على منزل جديد.
وقالت راينر (45 عاماً) في رسالتها إلى رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر: «أنا نادمة جداً على قراري بعدم طلب مشورة ضريبية إضافية متخصصة، وأتحمل المسؤولية الكاملة عن هذا الخطأ». وأضافت، التي استقالت أيضاً من منصبها كوزيرة ونائبة زعيم حزب العمال: «نظراً للنتائج وتأثيرها على عائلتي، قررت الاستقالة».

وعلق ستارمر على الاستقالة بالقول: «أنا حزين جداً لأن فترة عمل راينر في الحكومة انتهت بهذه الطريقة»، مشيراً إلى أنها اتخذت القرار الصحيح.
وتعد راينر ثامن وأرفع الوزراء الذين خرجوا من فريق رئيس الوزراء كير ستارمر، وتشكل استقالتها الأكثر ضرراً له حتى الآن، بعد أن قدم لها دعمه الكامل عندما اتُهمت لأول مرة بمحاولة تجنب دفع الضريبة المستحقة عمداً.
وكان يُنظر إلى راينر كخليفة محتملة لستارمر، لكنها اضطرت إلى إحالة نفسها إلى المستشار المستقل للمعايير الوزارية بعد اعترافها بخطأ ضريبي، خلال مقابلة تلفزيونية (الأربعاء)، كادت أن تبكي فيها.

وكشفت راينر أنها أسست صندوقاً ائتمانياً لأحد أبنائها، الذي يعاني من إعاقات دائمة نتيجة إصابة سابقة، وباعت الصندوق وحصتها من منزل العائلة في شمال إنجلترا لشراء شقة في منتجع هوف الساحلي جنوب إنجلترا، معتقدة أنها لن تُضطر لدفع ضريبة أعلى تُفرض عند شراء منزل ثانٍ، وبعد استشارة قانونية إضافية، أقرت بخطئها، وأكدت أنها ستتخذ خطوات لدفع الضريبة المستحقة.
من جهة أخرى، ذكرت وسائل إعلام بريطانية، اليوم، أن رئيسة مجلس العموم البريطاني لوسي باول ووزير شؤون اسكتلندا إيان موراي أُقيلا من منصبيهما.
ويواجه ستارمر المزيد من التحديات في إصلاح سلطته وصورة حزبه، الذي سبق أن اتهم بقبول هدايا باهظة الثمن من المتبرعين، بما في ذلك ملابس وتذاكر حفلات موسيقية. وخسارة نائبة رئيس الوزراء تشكل ضربة كبيرة، خصوصاً أن راينر، التي صعدت من أم مراهقة من الطبقة العاملة إلى أحد أعلى المناصب السياسية في بريطانيا، كانت تتمتع بجاذبية واسعة وقدرة على التوسط بين جناحي حزب العمال اليساري والوسطي للحفاظ على وحدة الحزب.

British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned today (Friday) after admitting that she had not paid property tax on a new home.
Rayner (45 years old) said in her message to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer: “I deeply regret my decision not to seek additional specialized tax advice, and I take full responsibility for this mistake.” She added, having also resigned from her position as Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party: “In light of the consequences and their impact on my family, I have decided to resign.”

Starmer commented on the resignation, saying: “I am very sad that Rayner’s time in government has ended this way,” noting that she made the right decision.
Rayner is the eighth and highest-ranking minister to leave Prime Minister Keir Starmer's team, and her resignation is the most damaging to him so far, after he had given her his full support when she was first accused of deliberately trying to avoid paying the tax owed.
Rayner was seen as a potential successor to Starmer, but she was forced to refer herself to the independent ministerial standards adviser after admitting to a tax error during a television interview (on Wednesday), in which she nearly cried.

Rayner revealed that she had set up a trust fund for one of her children, who suffers from permanent disabilities due to a previous injury, and sold the fund and her share of the family home in northern England to buy an apartment in the coastal resort of Hove in southern England, believing she would not have to pay the higher tax imposed when purchasing a second home. After seeking additional legal advice, she acknowledged her mistake and confirmed that she would take steps to pay the owed tax.
On another note, British media reported today that Speaker of the House of Commons Lucy Powell and Scottish Affairs Minister Ian Murray were dismissed from their positions.
Starmer faces further challenges in reforming his authority and the image of his party, which has previously been accused of accepting expensive gifts from donors, including clothing and concert tickets. The loss of the Deputy Prime Minister is a significant blow, especially since Rayner, who rose from a working-class teenage mother to one of the highest political positions in Britain, had broad appeal and the ability to mediate between the left and center wings of the Labour Party to maintain party unity.
The eight resignations, five of which were due to misconduct, indicate that Starmer has faced the highest number of ministerial resignations outside of government reshuffles compared to any Prime Minister at the start of their term since at least 1979.
