وسط دعوات للتظاهر رفضاً للزيارة، بعد جدل بشأن أوصاف «مهينة» بحق الصحفيين اللبنانيين، أدلى بها براك خلال مؤتمر صحفي أمس، ألغى المبعوث الأمريكي توم براك اليوم (الأربعاء)، زيارته إلى مدينتي صور والخيام جنوب لبنان.
ووصل الموفد الأمريكي صباحاً، إلى ثكنة فرنسوا الحاج في بلدة مرجعيون (جنوب لبنان) على متن طوافة، وسط انتشار للجيش اللبناني في المنطقة، وعند المدخل الشمالي لمدينة الخيام لمواكبة زيارته إلى المنطقة، وذلك بالتزامن مع انتشار دعوات على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي للتظاهر ظهر اليوم، في مناطق جنوب لبنان، رفضاً لحضور براك، ومن ضمن هذه الدعوات كانت من «شباب صور» الذين شددوا على رفض حضور من وصفوه بـ«المندوب السامي الجديد»، بالإضافة إلى رفض كل مواقفه التي لم يكن آخرها إهانة الصحفيات والصحفيين اللبنانيين والأجانب.
وشددت الدعوة على أن من أسباب التظاهر التمسك بـ«السلاح كالسبيل الوحيد إلى تحقيق السيادة».
ووصف باراك سلوك الصحفيين اللبنانيين في المؤتمر الصحفي، بأنه «فوضوي»، و«حيواني»، ما استدعى رداً غاضباً من نقابة محرري الصحف، وحدا بالرئاسة اللبنانية لإصدار بيان تأسف فيه على تصريحات ضيفها.
وربط براك خلال المؤتمر بين خطة حصر السلاح اللبناني، والانسحاب الإسرائيلي من النقاط الخمس التي لا تزال إسرائيل تحتلها، في انتهاك لبنود اتفاق وقف النار في نوفمبر الماضي.
وقال براك إن إسرائيل أبلغته بأنها لا تريد احتلال لبنان، ولكنها لن تتخذ أي خطوة للانسحاب إلا عندما تطلع على خطة لبنان لنزع سلاح حزب الله، مشيراً إلى أن لبنان سيطرح خطة في 31 أغسطس لإقناع حزب الله بالتخلي عن سلاحه.
وأشار إلى أن المقترح اللبناني لنزع سلاح حزب الله «لن يكون بالضرورة عسكرياً».
Amid calls for protests against the visit, following a controversy over "demeaning" descriptions of Lebanese journalists made by Barack during a press conference yesterday, U.S. envoy Tom Barack canceled his visit today (Wednesday) to the cities of Tyre and Khiam in southern Lebanon.
The American envoy arrived in the morning at the François al-Hajj barracks in the town of Marjayoun (southern Lebanon) by helicopter, amidst the deployment of the Lebanese army in the area, and at the northern entrance of the city of Khiam to accompany his visit to the region. This coincided with calls on social media for protests this afternoon in southern Lebanon against Barack's presence, including calls from "Youth of Tyre," who emphasized their rejection of the attendance of someone they described as the "new high commissioner," in addition to rejecting all his positions, the latest of which was the insult to Lebanese and foreign journalists.
The call emphasized that one of the reasons for the protests is the insistence on "arms as the only means to achieve sovereignty."
Barack described the behavior of Lebanese journalists at the press conference as "chaotic" and "animalistic," which elicited an angry response from the Journalists' Syndicate and prompted the Lebanese presidency to issue a statement expressing regret over the remarks of its guest.
During the conference, Barack linked the plan to restrict Lebanese arms to the Israeli withdrawal from the five points still occupied by Israel, in violation of the ceasefire agreement from last November.
Barack stated that Israel informed him that it does not want to occupy Lebanon, but it will not take any steps to withdraw until it sees Lebanon's plan for disarming Hezbollah, noting that Lebanon will present a plan on August 31 to persuade Hezbollah to give up its weapons.
He pointed out that the Lebanese proposal for disarming Hezbollah "will not necessarily be military."
