A number of ministers from the Dutch caretaker government belonging to the center-right party announced their resignation following a dispute over the government's policy towards Israel due to its devastating war on the Gaza Strip.
The wave of resignations from the "New Social Contract" (NSC) party came after the resignation of Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp, a party member, on Friday evening.
Veldkamp, the former ambassador of the Netherlands in Tel Aviv, stated that he was unable to reach an agreement on concrete measures in response to Israel's actions in Gaza, adding that he repeatedly faced objections from his government colleagues regarding the measures that the Netherlands had already imposed, according to Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, the Dutch newspaper "Dutch News" reported that after Veldkamp's resignation, he was followed by Social Affairs Minister Eddy van Heum, Interior Minister Judith Outermark, Education Minister Ibo Bruins, Health Minister Daniel Jansen, and four state ministers.
Social Affairs Minister Eddy van Heum, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, stated that the disagreement over Israel was the reason for their withdrawal from this fragile coalition, which has been governing the country since the government collapsed last June.
He added that Veldkamp felt a strong need for more actions against the Israeli government, but brakes were constantly being applied.
On her part, the leader of the "New Social Contract" party, Nicolien van Vroonhoven, said that the party sent a message that an improvement in the situation was necessary, and this did not happen, so we are taking steps now, according to what was published by Politico.
For his part, Prime Minister Dick Schuf expressed his regret over the withdrawal of the "New Social Contract" party from the government. He said during a speech before parliament: We must respect these decisions, but we deeply regret them, especially in light of the responsibility that falls on the government during this transitional phase. He added that he would seek advice before making a decision on how to deal with a government whose parties hold only 31 seats out of 150 in parliament.
The Dutch government collapsed last June after the far-right leader Geert Wilders and his Freedom Party withdrew from the coalition, after their three partners refused to support his plans to curb immigration, and the government lasted for only about a year.
Among the measures that the Netherlands imposed against Tel Aviv was the ban on the entry of two ministers in the Israeli government, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, accusing them of repeatedly inciting settler violence against Palestinians, according to Bloomberg.
The resigned foreign minister canceled three export permits for maritime components directed to Israel due to the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the risk of undesirable use.
