طالب 17 عضوا في مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي وزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو بالضغط على إسرائيل لحماية الصحفيين والسماح لهم فورا بالدخول إلى قطاع غزة، مؤكدين في رسالة موقعة من 16 سيناتوراً ديمقراطياً والسيناتور المستقل بيرني ساندرز ضرورة أن توضح أمريكيا لإسرائيل أن حظر المنظمات الإعلامية وفرض رقابة عليها واستهداف أو تهديد أعضاء الصحافة أمر غير مقبول ويجب أن يتوقف.
وقال أعضاء مجلس الشيوخ في الرسالة التي وجهت إلى وزير الخارجية الأمريكي: «إنهم يحضون وزارة الخارجية على مطالبة الحكومة الإسرائيلية بحماية الصحفيين في غزة، والسماح لوسائل الإعلام الدولية بالوصول إلى القطاع الفلسطيني المدمر جراء الحرب المستمرة منذ 22 شهرا، موضحين أن الاستهداف الأخير للصحفيين يكشف نمطا متبعا من قبل الجيش الإسرائيلي في استهداف وإسكات أصوات الصحفيين الناقلين للمعاناة في غزة».
وأشارت أعضاء مجلس الشيوخ إلى أن إسرائيل لم تقدم أي دليل يثبت أن الصحفيين مقاتلين في حركة حماس كما روجت سابقا، كما لم تقدم أي مبرر عسكري لاستهدافهم، متسائلين عما إذا كانت الخارجية الأمريكية قد طالبت بتحقيق مستقل بشأن اغتيال الصحفيين.
وأكدوا في الرسالة أن تعزيز حرية الصحافة في العالم والحفاظ على سلامة الصحفيين والنهوض بالقانون الدولي أمور ضرورية لمكانة الولايات المتحدة القيادية ولتعزيز مصالحها وقيمها، مبينين أنه التفسيرات غير المقنعة في استهداف الصحفيين يعتبر اعترفا إسرائيليا علنيا باستهداف وقتل الصحفيين الذين يكشفون للعالم حجم المعاناة في غزة، مستنكرين ما قد يشكل انتهاكا للقانون الدولي.
Seventeen members of the U.S. Senate have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pressure Israel to protect journalists and allow them immediate access to the Gaza Strip, emphasizing in a letter signed by 16 Democratic senators and independent Senator Bernie Sanders the necessity for America to make it clear to Israel that banning media organizations, imposing censorship, and targeting or threatening members of the press is unacceptable and must stop.
The senators stated in the letter addressed to the U.S. Secretary of State: "They urge the State Department to demand that the Israeli government protect journalists in Gaza and allow international media to access the Palestinian territory devastated by the ongoing war for 22 months, clarifying that the recent targeting of journalists reveals a pattern followed by the Israeli army in targeting and silencing the voices of journalists conveying the suffering in Gaza."
The senators pointed out that Israel has not provided any evidence proving that journalists are fighters in Hamas as previously claimed, nor has it offered any military justification for targeting them, questioning whether the U.S. State Department has called for an independent investigation into the assassinations of journalists.
They affirmed in the letter that promoting press freedom worldwide, ensuring the safety of journalists, and advancing international law are essential for the United States' leadership position and for enhancing its interests and values, indicating that the unconvincing explanations for targeting journalists constitute an Israeli acknowledgment of targeting and killing journalists who reveal to the world the extent of suffering in Gaza, condemning what may constitute a violation of international law.
