The Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaybani accused Israel of being behind the recent events of "sectarian strife" that took place in the Sweida Governorate.
During a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Ankara today (Wednesday), Al-Shaybani stated: "Our country is committed to holding accountable any violations in Sweida, emphasizing that this is the responsibility of the state." He stressed his rejection of the exploitation of the people of Sweida by Israel and others, asserting that the protection of Sweida and its residents is the state's responsibility. Al-Shaybani confirmed that Syria belongs to all Syrians and that we must prioritize the language of reason, emphasizing that the Druze are an essential part of the Syrian people.
He reiterated that Syria's stability is the region's stability, but he acknowledged that his country faces challenges no less serious than those encountered during the war.
Al-Shaybani revealed that Syria is facing external interventions that seek to push it towards strife, affirming that we extend our hand to all countries without interfering in our affairs.
For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that his country supports Syria in standing on its feet. He noted that the Syrian government has made progress on several issues, but it faces difficulties due to limited resources. Fidan accused Israel of manipulating the situation in Syria, pointing out that Israel's priority is to create chaos in Syria.
He said that some are disturbed and want a negative reality for Syria, affirming that the Syrian government desires a country where everyone feels safe. He emphasized that Ankara wants all ethnic and religious components in Syria to be united in one state. The Turkish Foreign Minister revealed that he holds regular and intensive meetings with Syrian officials.
