The Sudanese army has reinforced its defenses around the city of Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in the west of the country. Military sources reported that the armed forces have bolstered their positions in the southern and southwestern parts of the city in anticipation of any attacks from the Rapid Support Forces following their recent threats today (Tuesday).
According to eyewitnesses, the Rapid Support Forces continue to maintain their presence in the Um Samima area, located 40 kilometers west of Al-Obeid, with the aim of preventing the army's advance and incursion westward towards Darfur. The Sudanese army's aviation and artillery have been dealing with reconnaissance movements of the Rapid Support Forces in the nearby Abkaoud area over the past few hours.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in the city of El Fasher, the capital of the Darfur region, has worsened, with hunger intensifying for nearly half a million civilians who have been besieged since May 2024.
The number of deaths due to cholera in the displacement camps in the Darfur region has risen to 197 cases over the past few hours, bringing the total cumulative daily cases of the disease since its outbreak in Darfur to 4,113 cases.
The Rapid Support Forces and their allies control most of the vast Darfur region in western Sudan, as well as some areas in the south, while the Sudanese army controls the north and east of the country, in addition to the capital, Khartoum.
In the meantime, the Anti-Terrorism Court in Sudan has charged the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, along with two of his brothers and 13 other defendants, with committing genocide and crimes against humanity in the case of the murder of the former governor of West Darfur, Khamees Abdullah Abkar.
The Public Prosecution stated in a statement today that the Anti-Terrorism and State Crimes Court in Port Sudan, which convened under the presidency of Judge Mamoun Al-Khawad, has officially charged the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, his brothers Abdel Rahim and Al-Qoni Dagalo, in addition to 13 other defendants, with committing genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and looting in the case of the murder of the former governor of West Darfur, Khamees Abdullah Abkar.
It was mentioned that the attack on the city of Geneina on April 15, 2023, was carried out under the leadership of the Rapid Support Forces commander and targeted the Masalit tribe based on ethnicity, resulting in the deaths of thousands and the displacement of hundreds of thousands to Chad, as well as the brutal killing of the victim, the former governor of West Darfur, and the mutilation of his body.
Khamees Abkar and his brother were killed on June 14, 2023, shortly after his arrest by the Rapid Support Forces.
