وضعت السلطات البرازيلية الرئيس السابق جايير بولسونارو، الذي يحاكم بتهمة التخطيط لانقلاب، قيد الإقامة الجبرية، (الإثنين)، في خطوة قد تزيد من حدة التوتر مع إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب.
وأصدر قاضي المحكمة العليا أليشاندري دي مورايس أمر وضعه قيد الإقامة الجبرية قائلا في قراره إن الرئيس السابق لم يمتثل لأوامر التقييد القضائية التي فُرضت عليه الشهر الماضي.
ويواجه بولسونارو اتهامات بالتآمر مع العشرات من حلفائه لإلغاء خسارته في انتخابات عام 2022 أمام الرئيس اليساري لويس إيناسيو لولا دا سيلفا.
وحظر القاضي مورايس أيضا على بولسونارو استقبال زائرين، باستثناء المحامين والأشخاص المصرح لهم من قبل المحكمة، واستخدام الهاتف المحمول سواء بشكل مباشر أو من خلال طرف ثالث.
وأكد ممثل صحفي لبولسونارو وضع الرئيس السابق قيد الإقامة الجبرية في منزله يوم الإثنين ومصادرة هاتفه المحمول.
وقالت الشرطة الاتحادية في بيان إنها امتثلت لأوامر من المحكمة العليا بفرض إقامة جبرية ومصادرة الهاتف المحمول، دون أن تذكر اسم الشخص المستهدف بالعملية.
وكانت القيود قد فرضت على بولسونارو بسبب اتهامه بالتودد سعيا إلى تدخل من ترمب، الذي ربط رسوما جمركية جديدة باهظة فرضها أخيرا على السلع البرازيلية بما وصفها بأنها حملة على بولسونارو.
ويأتي فرض الإقامة الجبرية بعد تحقيقات لأكثر من عامين في دور بولسونارو في حركة رفض الانتخابات التي شهدت في ذروتها أعمال شغب ارتكبها أنصاره وهزت العاصمة برازيليا في يناير 2023.
وأثارت تلك الاضطرابات مقارنات مع أعمال الشغب في مبنى الكونغرس الأمريكي بعد هزيمة ترمب الانتخابية في عام 2020.
وكانت واشنطن قد فرضت عقوبات على مورايس في أواخر يوليو، متهمة القاضي بالسماح بالاعتقال التعسفي قبل المحاكمات وقمع حرية التعبير.
The Brazilian authorities have placed former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for allegedly plotting a coup, under house arrest on (Monday), a move that may escalate tensions with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order for house arrest, stating in his decision that the former president had not complied with judicial restrictions imposed on him last month.
Bolsonaro faces accusations of conspiring with dozens of his allies to overturn his loss in the 2022 elections to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Judge Moraes also prohibited Bolsonaro from receiving visitors, except for lawyers and individuals authorized by the court, and from using a mobile phone either directly or through a third party.
A press representative for Bolsonaro confirmed that the former president was placed under house arrest at his home on Monday and that his mobile phone was confiscated.
The federal police stated in a statement that they complied with orders from the Supreme Court to impose house arrest and confiscate the mobile phone, without naming the individual targeted in the operation.
The restrictions were imposed on Bolsonaro due to accusations of courting intervention from Trump, who linked new hefty tariffs recently imposed on Brazilian goods to what he described as a campaign against Bolsonaro.
The house arrest comes after more than two years of investigations into Bolsonaro's role in the election denial movement, which peaked with riots committed by his supporters that shook the capital Brasília in January 2023.
Those disturbances drew comparisons to the riots at the U.S. Capitol following Trump's electoral defeat in 2020.
Washington had imposed sanctions on Moraes in late July, accusing the judge of allowing arbitrary detention before trials and suppressing freedom of expression.
