A cautious calm hangs over the province of Suwayda in southern Syria today (Monday), following a day of sporadic clashes that violated the ceasefire agreement signed last month.
The Syrian security forces have reopened the humanitarian corridor of "Busr al-Sham," which connects Daraa and Suwayda in the south of the country, after securing the area.
The Syrian news agency "SANA" reported that relief and humanitarian aid is entering Suwayda from the direction of Busr al-Sham in the Daraa countryside, as part of the government's efforts to meet the humanitarian needs of the province's residents.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior had temporarily closed the "Busr al-Sham" corridor until it could be secured, at a time when Druze factions known locally as "popular resistance" controlled the Tel al-Hadid area, less than 8 kilometers west of the city of Suwayda, before withdrawing in response to the guarantor parties.
SANA reported yesterday (Sunday) that a security source stated that the internal security forces managed to regain control over several areas in the Suwayda countryside, following an attack launched by "lawless groups."
The Syrian source confirmed that the area is secured by the internal security forces, and that clashes have ceased, in order to maintain the ceasefire agreement.
It is noteworthy that the Syrian authorities signed a multi-phase agreement last month with armed groups in Suwayda to cease fire, following bloody clashes that occurred in the province between tribal groups and Druze factions.
The Syrian "News" channel reported that the Syrian Civil Defense confirmed the safe exit of 90 families comprising 316 individuals from the province of Suwayda and the entry of 8 families comprising 31 individuals through the humanitarian crossing of "Busr al-Sham."
The Syrian Ministry of Interior accused "lawless groups" in Suwayda of violating the ceasefire agreement by launching attacks targeting government forces in several villages.
In a statement, it said that what it described as "rebel gangs in the province of Suwayda continue to violate the ceasefire agreement by launching attacks on internal security forces in several fronts, in addition to shelling some villages with rockets and mortars," which resulted in the death of one internal security member and injuries to others.
It confirmed that the Syrian state, since the start of the ceasefire agreement in Suwayda, has spared no effort to solidify this agreement, out of its commitment to restore stability to the province, and has worked through all its military, security, civil, and service sectors to secure the lives of civilians and to gradually pave the way for the return of services and normal life.
