As anger rises among Israelis and the military due to decisions made by political leadership, an investigation by the Israeli army revealed today (Sunday) a rise in suicide cases among Israeli soldiers, in the context of the war on Gaza.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported that since the beginning of 2025, 16 soldiers have committed suicide, confirming that there are significant concerns within the Israeli army about the spread of this phenomenon.
The authority stated that the majority of suicide cases within the army are attributed to the repercussions of the war on Gaza, indicating that the soldiers who took their own lives faced severe psychological pressures, manifested in prolonged stays in combat zones, exposure to harsh scenes, as well as the loss of their comrades and an inability to comprehend the violent events.
It noted that the occupation army investigates each suicide case individually, with investigations including examining the messages left by the soldiers and conducting conversations with their close surroundings.
The authority quoted an Israeli military source as saying: “Most of the soldiers' suicide cases resulted from a complex reality caused by the war; wars have consequences,” pointing out that the Israeli army has not recognized the soldiers who committed suicide as "war victims."
A report from the army indicated that suicide rates among soldiers during 2024 reached 21 cases, an increase of 4 individuals compared to the previous year, 2023, while 16 soldiers committed suicide in the first third of the current year.
The emergence of the suicide phenomenon coincided with a severe crisis between the political and military leaderships amid the ongoing war in Gaza. According to Maariv newspaper, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deliberately marginalizes the role of Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and prevents him from presenting the army's plans for the next phase to the security and political cabinet (the cabinet).
The newspaper reported that Zamir has been requesting for several days to hold a cabinet session to present plans for continuing military operations, but Netanyahu refuses, leaving the army in a state of strategic ambiguity regarding the course of the war, indicating that the situation reflects a growing disagreement between the military and political institutions, at a time when the army considers that the missions of Operation "Gideon's Chariots" have been completed, and the ball is now in the political level's court.
An Israeli security official told the newspaper: “We do not know what the political level wants; we provided a complete picture of the situation and clarified that we have completed our missions. Now it is their turn to act,” explaining that the security and military institutions know that the political level is now ready for a comprehensive prisoner exchange deal instead of achieving it in stages, but they do not know what is happening in the negotiations.
He pointed out that in the past they were partners in the details, “but now the matter is managed between only two people, Netanyahu and Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, and we learn about developments from the other side through intelligence channels.”
The newspaper reported that the atmosphere within the leadership of the occupation army reflects great frustration with the way senior political level officials are managing the war, quoting a prominent source as saying that the military leadership is not allowed to present the plan to the cabinet, and it does not know what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Defense Minister Israel Katz wants, nor where they are leading the continuation of operations.
