Finnish President Alexander Stubb revealed his readiness to agree to the recognition of a Palestinian state if the government presents such a proposal. Stubb wrote in a post on the "X" platform yesterday (Thursday): "The decisions of France, Britain, and Canada reinforce the trend towards recognizing Palestine, as part of efforts to revive the peace process." He stated: "If I receive a proposal to recognize Palestine, I am ready to approve it," condemning the "inhumane" situation in the Gaza Strip. The Finnish president noted that he is aware of the differing opinions among Finns regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state, as well as concerns, calling for an open and honest discussion.

The far-right "True Finns" party and the "Christian Democrats" oppose the recognition of a Palestinian state.

For his part, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reiterated today (Friday) Stubb's support for a two-state solution, without specifying whether his government intends to proceed with recognizing a Palestinian state. He clarified that consultations with the president regarding foreign policy and Middle Eastern issues will continue until the United Nations General Assembly convenes at the end of September.

The elected Finnish president, serving a 6-year term, has limited powers, but he participates in coordinating foreign policy in close cooperation with government members.

It is noteworthy that several countries, including France, Canada, Portugal, and Malta, intend to recognize a Palestinian state on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings scheduled for next September.
