The local authorities in St. Petersburg announced the cancellation of the parade, which was supposed to include displays of warships and submarines, in addition to aerial displays and demonstrations of sailing boats and motor vessels. Initially, a statement from the city's transport committee mentioned the cancellation of the fireworks and the main parade, but the statement was later amended to clarify that the Ministry of Defense is responsible for organizing the event.
Local sources reported that the parade was to be replaced by a ceremony for laying wreaths and limited celebrations in Palace Square in St. Petersburg. The authorities did not clarify the nature of the security threats, but the timing coincides with an increase in Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets, including naval operations in the Black Sea, raising questions about the internal security challenges facing Russia.
Russian Navy Day, revived in 2017 by a decree from President Vladimir Putin, is a major occasion for showcasing Russian naval power, and the main parade is usually held in the coastal city of St. Petersburg, where warships, submarines, and naval aircraft are displayed in a grand review attended by high-ranking officials, including President Putin most of the time.
The event aims to highlight the strength of the Russian Navy and bolster national spirit, in addition to sending political and military messages to the international community. In recent years, the parade has gained increasing symbolic importance amid escalating tensions with the West, especially following the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the worsening conflict with Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
