French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized today (Saturday) the necessity of avoiding a repetition of violence and protecting civilians in Syria, reaffirming his support for Syria's stability during a phone call with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara.
Macron stated after the call: "Civilians must be protected; it is essential to avoid a repetition of cycles of violence and to hold accountable those responsible for these violent acts," describing the ceasefire in Sweida as a "positive signal."
He added: "Now, calm dialogue must enable the goal of unifying Syria while respecting the rights of all its citizens," expecting prosecutions to follow based on the report provided by the independent committee regarding the violence on the coast.
He noted that he spoke with the Syrian president about the urgent necessity of finding a political solution with local parties, within a national framework for governance and security. Additionally, it is essential that negotiations between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian authorities proceed in good faith, pointing out that the trilateral discussions allowed for the identification of the next steps.
Macron reaffirmed his country's commitment to Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, indicating that he addressed discussions with Israel in this regard.
The French president mentioned that he and his Syrian counterpart expressed their support for cooperation in stabilizing the Syrian-Lebanese border, stating that he confirmed his country's readiness to support these efforts.
He clarified that he observed a commitment from President al-Shara to combat terrorism, noting that he emphasized the necessity of mutual cooperation to al-Shara.
On another note, Syria, France, and the United States confirmed their continued cooperation to ensure Syria's unity, stability, and sovereignty over its entire territory, and to support the capabilities of the Syrian state and its institutions to address security challenges. According to the Syrian news agency "SANA," Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, and the U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barak held a frank and constructive meeting in the French capital, Paris, as part of the close cooperation among the participating parties during a pivotal moment for Syria.
The meeting emphasized the need for swift engagement in substantive efforts to ensure the success of the transition process in Syria, guaranteeing the unity of the country, its stability, and its sovereignty over its entire territory, as well as a commitment to joint cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms, and to support the capabilities of the Syrian state and its institutions to address security challenges. It also aimed to support the Syrian government in its political transition process, which seeks to achieve national reconciliation and enhance social cohesion, particularly in northeastern Syria and Sweida Governorate. Additionally, they agreed to hold a round of consultations between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces in Paris as soon as possible to fully implement the agreement of March 10, and to support efforts aimed at holding accountable those responsible for acts of violence, welcoming in this context the outcomes of transparent reports, including the recent report from the independent national committee tasked with uncovering and investigating the events that occurred on the Syrian coast.
The attendees emphasized that neighboring countries do not pose any threat to Syria's stability, while also reaffirming Syria's commitment not to pose a threat to the security of its neighbors, in order to maintain stability throughout the region.
