A Syrian security source revealed that the ceasefire agreement in Suwayda is being implemented in most areas without violations. The source stated, in a statement today (Tuesday), that the calm in Suwayda will allow the government to quickly return families to their homes, confirming that the next step in the governorate will be to implement a comprehensive truce and exchange detainees.
For his part, the governor of Suwayda, Mustafa al-Bakur, inspected areas in Daraa governorate that received displaced persons from Suwayda, to assess their conditions and understand their needs, as part of the government's response to the displaced from the governorate.
The governor called on everyone to exercise restraint and calm, and to strive for the restoration of civil peace and open new pages for reconciliation among all parties, and to return people to their homes.
He noted that the people he met during the tour were saying: "We want to return to our homes, we do not want to remain displaced or refugees," adding: "We told them: You are now guests, and you will return to the homes where you were born, lived, and were raised; you are part of the governorate and the children of this land," according to what was reported by the Suwayda page on its official pages.
A government official in Daraa governorate announced yesterday, Monday, that more than 3,500 families of Bedouins and Druze have fled their homes in Suwayda governorate to Daraa governorate in southern Syria.
Tensions in southern Syria escalated on July 13, after clashes broke out in Suwayda governorate between Bedouin tribes and Druze militants.
On July 15, Syrian security forces entered the city of Suwayda to stabilize the situation, but shortly thereafter, Israel began targeting Syrian military vehicles heading to the governorate and bombed several strategic sites in the Syrian capital on July 16.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on the evening of July 16 the withdrawal of all military forces from the city of Suwayda, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement that was reached despite the ongoing clashes between the Bedouins and Druze factions.
