The American envoy Tom Brack emphasized the necessity for peace and dialogue in Syria, which stands at a critical juncture. He described President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions as a "preliminary step." Brack confirmed in a post on his account on the platform "X" today (Sunday) that this decision provided the Syrian people with an opportunity to overcome years of suffering and unbelievable atrocities.
He stated that the international community, which has cautiously watched Syria's efforts to transition from a legacy of pain to a bright future, has largely supported the emerging government. However, this fragile ambition is now overshadowed by a deep shock, as the atrocities committed by the warring factions on the ground undermine the government's authority and disrupt any semblance of order.
The American envoy to Syria called on all factions to lay down their arms immediately, cease hostilities, and abandon the cycle of tribal revenge.
The U.S. embassy in Syria revealed last night (Saturday) that envoy Tom Brack met with the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi. It added in a post on "X" that the meeting discussed steps towards integration in a unified Syria, for a peaceful and prosperous future for all Syrians. The American envoy assured Abdi that the time has come for unity.
Brack stressed the need for urgent steps to restore calm and stability in Syria.
Brack had previously called on the Syrian Democratic Forces to reach an understanding with the government in Damascus. Last week, in a briefing about strengthening U.S.-Turkish relations and developing relations with Syria, he stated that Syria needs resources to rebuild quickly and requires the world's support. He emphasized that President Donald Trump's vision is to give Syria a chance.
Brack added: "We want a unified Syria, and a constitution that guarantees a parliament representing everyone... We do not want an Alawite or Druze state, nor a separate entity for the Syrian Democratic Forces." He confirmed that the only available path for the SDF is to head towards Damascus.
It is noteworthy that the commander of the SDF reached an agreement with President Ahmad al-Shara on March 10, which stipulated in its first clause the guarantee of the rights of all Syrians in representation and participation in the political process and all state institutions based on competence, regardless of their religious and ethnic backgrounds, and that the Kurdish community is an indigenous community in the Syrian state, with the Syrian state guaranteeing its citizenship rights and all its constitutional rights.
The agreement included a ceasefire across all Syrian territories, and the integration of all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria within the administration of the Syrian state, including border crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields.
The agreement also guaranteed the return of all displaced Syrians to their towns and their protection by the state, combating remnants of the previous regime, rejecting calls for division, hate speech, and attempts to sow discord, in addition to forming executive committees to implement the agreement by the end of this year at the latest.
