Members of the United Nations Security Council late yesterday (Thursday) called for Israel to stop its attacks on Syria, expressing their concern during an emergency session of the council convened at the request of Damascus regarding the ongoing events in Sweida, southern Syria.
Security Council members emphasized the necessity of preserving Syria's unity, integrity, and sovereignty, while the Assistant Secretary-General for Middle Eastern and Asia-Pacific Affairs, Khaled Khiari, stated that Israel's actions undermine efforts to build a new Syria that is reconciled with itself and the region.
For his part, Syria's permanent representative, Ambassador Qusai al-Dahhak, thanked the council for its swift response to his country's request to hold the emergency session to discuss the repercussions of the "brutal Israeli aggression" against his country, clarifying that his country condemns "this blatant aggression" in the strongest terms.
Al-Dahhak stated: "This aggression constitutes a gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter and a violation of the sovereignty of a member state of the organization," announcing his country's firm rejection of "the justifications put forth by the Israeli occupation to justify these aggressive acts."
The Syrian permanent representative to the United Nations described these practices as "nothing but an extension of the systematic occupation policies aimed at undermining Syria's stability and dragging it into the arena of conflict," calling on the Security Council and the United Nations Secretariat to condemn the Israeli attacks, as well as urging the international community to confront this serious threat to international peace and security and to the unity and integrity of Syrian territory.
For his part, the Russian permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, condemned the Israeli attacks on Syria, affirming that Moscow consistently supports Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, criticized the Israeli airstrikes on Syria, calling on Israel to cease them immediately and withdraw from Syrian territory, including the Golan Heights, as soon as possible.
Acting U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, announced that her country did not support the recent Israeli strikes on Damascus, indicating that the United States is diplomatically engaged with both Israel and Syria at the highest levels to address the current crisis and reach a lasting agreement between two sovereign nations.
