أعلن قصر باكنغهام، اليوم (الإثنين)، أن الملك تشارلز الثالث سيستضيف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب وزوجته في زيارة دولة إلى بريطانيا من 17 إلى 19 سبتمبر، في حدث يُعد الثاني من نوعه لزعيم سياسي منتخب في العصر الحديث.
وستُقام الزيارة في قلعة وندسور، على أن يتم الإعلان عن تفاصيل إضافية لاحقاً.
وكشف ترمب الشهر الماضي موافقته على لقاء الملك تشارلز بعد تسلّمه رسالة مكتوبة بخط اليد من الملك عبر رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر خلال لقاء في المكتب البيضاوي.
وتأتي هذه الزيارة كثاني زيارة دولة لترمب إلى بريطانيا، بعد زيارته الأولى في يونيو 2019 خلال ولايته الأولى، حيث استضافته الملكة إليزابيث الراحلة في قصر باكنغهام، وتضمنت الزيارة غداءً خاصاً مع الملكة، وتناول الشاي مع تشارلز، الذي كان آنذاك ولي العهد.
وتشهد العلاقات بين ترمب وستارمر تحسناً ملحوظاً في الآونة الأخيرة، حيث وقّع الزعيمان اتفاقية تجارية إطارية على هامش قمة مجموعة السبع الشهر الماضي، ساهمت في خفض بعض الرسوم الجمركية الأمريكية على الواردات البريطانية.
كما أفادت مصادر بأن الزعيمين سيلتقيان في أسكتلندا في وقت لاحق هذا الشهر، مع انتظار تأكيد التفاصيل النهائية.
وأثارت دعوة بريطانيا لترمب انتقادات من رئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني في مايو الماضي، معتبراً أنها تقوّض جهود حكومته لإظهار جبهة موحدة ضد تصريحات ترمب حول ضم كندا. كما شهدت زيارات ترمب السابقة إلى بريطانيا، لاسيما في 2018، احتجاجات واسعة النطاق، حيث تكبدت الشرطة تكاليف تزيد على 14 مليون جنيه إسترليني (18.88 مليون دولار) لنشر 10 آلاف ضابط من جميع أنحاء البلاد.
وتشير استطلاعات الرأي إلى أن غالبية البريطانيين لديهم نظرة سلبية تجاه الرئيس الأمريكي.
وتُعرف الزيارات الدولية إلى بريطانيا بطابعها الفخم، حيث تشمل عادةً جولة في عربة مكشوفة عبر وسط لندن، ومأدبة رسمية في قصر باكنغهام، ومع ذلك فإن استضافة الزيارة في قلعة وندسور قد تعكس نهجاً أكثر خصوصية مقارنة بالزيارة الأولى.
Buckingham Palace announced today (Monday) that King Charles III will host U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife for a state visit to Britain from September 17 to 19, in what is considered the second of its kind for an elected political leader in modern times.
The visit will take place at Windsor Castle, with additional details to be announced later.
Trump revealed last month that he agreed to meet King Charles after receiving a handwritten letter from the king through British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting in the Oval Office.
This visit marks Trump's second state visit to Britain, following his first visit in June 2019 during his first term, when he was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. The visit included a private lunch with the queen and tea with Charles, who was then the heir apparent.
Relations between Trump and Starmer have shown notable improvement recently, as the two leaders signed a framework trade agreement on the sidelines of the G7 summit last month, which helped reduce some U.S. tariffs on British imports.
Sources also reported that the two leaders will meet in Scotland later this month, with final details awaiting confirmation.
Britain's invitation to Trump drew criticism from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last May, who argued that it undermined his government's efforts to present a united front against Trump's comments about annexing Canada. Trump's previous visits to Britain, particularly in 2018, saw widespread protests, with police incurring costs exceeding £14 million ($18.88 million) to deploy 10,000 officers from across the country.
Polls indicate that the majority of Britons hold a negative view of the U.S. president.
International visits to Britain are known for their grandeur, typically including a tour in an open-top carriage through central London and a formal banquet at Buckingham Palace. However, hosting the visit at Windsor Castle may reflect a more private approach compared to the first visit.
