The spokesperson for the Nigerian presidency announced today (Sunday) the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who led the country from 2015 to 2023, in the British capital (London).
The spokesperson for the current president, Bola Tinubu, stated in a post on the platform "X": "President Buhari passed away today in London around 4:30 PM after a long battle with illness," explaining that Buhari (82 years old) also served as head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
Buhari assumed the presidency of Nigeria after winning the elections in March 2015, having dealt a decisive defeat to his opponent, the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan. He also won a second term and remained in office until 2023, and was a former general and politician.
He was born in 1942 in a small village called "Dora," located in Katsina State in northern Nigeria near the border with Chad. He joined the army at the age of 19 and then studied military arts in Britain before returning to his country to hold important military positions.
