The "Financial Times" revealed that the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) has asked Japan and Australia to clarify their roles in the event that the United States and China enter into a war over Taiwan.

The British newspaper reported in its article, citing sources familiar with the discussions, that U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby was pushing this issue during recent talks with defense officials from both countries.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting described as "positive" with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Malaysia yesterday (Friday), in a clear attempt to resolve the disputes between their countries, according to Washington and Beijing.

This is the first direct meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries since President Donald Trump returned to power last January, and it took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meetings in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting came amid disagreements between Washington and Beijing over several issues, including Taiwan.

The official Chinese statement did not mention any points of contention, not even regarding Taiwan, which is unusual for diplomatic communication with Washington.

The Taiwanese military began today (Saturday) to deploy one of its newest and most precise offensive weapons, ahead of live-fire drills aimed at demonstrating the island's determination to resist any invasion.

Officials reported that the drills are intended to show China and the international community, including the United States as the main arms supplier to Taiwan, that the island is determined to defend itself against any attack or invasion.
