بعد نحو أسبوع على الكارثة التي حلت بتكساس نتيجة الفيضانات المدمرة، عبر الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب عن صدمته من حجم الدمار الذي عاينه في الولاية جراء الفيضانات الأخيرة التي خلّفت عشرات القتلى والمفقودين، ودافع عن أداء إدارته والسلطات المحلية تجاه الكارثة. وزار ترمب وزوجته ميلانيا أمس (الجمعة) مدينة كيرفيل في مقاطعة كير الأكثر تضرراً. ووصف «الوضع بأنه صعب.. لقد شهدت كثيراً من الأعاصير.. لم أرَ مثيلاً لهذا».
ورد ترمب بغضب على صحفيين شككوا في سرعة استجابة السلطات في هذه الولاية الجمهورية للكارثة، قائلاً إنه يريد التركيز على التضامن مع عمال الإغاثة والمتطوعين.
وتجاهل أسئلة حول تأثير حملته الرامية إلى تقليص القوة العاملة في الوكالات الفدرالية ومنها وكالة إدارة الطوارئ الاتحادية، على الاستجابة للفيضانات التي وصفها بأنها «كارثة تحدث كل 100 عام» و«لم يتوقعها أحد».
وشبّه الرئيس الأمريكي منسوب المياه الذي ارتفع على نحو مباغت بـ«موجة عملاقة في المحيط الهادي يخشاها أفضل راكبي الأمواج في العالم».

وأسفرت الفيضانات عن مقتل 120 شخصا بينهم 96 منهم في مقاطعة كير، في حين لا يزال 130 آخرون في عداد المفقودين، وتواصلت أمس عمليات البحث عنهم.
ومن بين الضحايا 27 فتاة ومشرفون كانوا في مخيم صيفي عندما باغتهم فيضان نهر غوادالوبي.
وتعرضت السلطات في تكساس لانتقادات حادة بشأن مدى استجابتها الفورية للكارثة، خصوصاً تأخر رسائل الإخلاء الطارئ للسكان والزوار على طول نهر غوادالوبي.
إلا أن الرئيس ترمب وأعضاء في إدارته دافعوا عن أداء المسؤولين المحليين، معتبرين أن الاستجابة كانت سريعة.
About a week after the disaster that struck Texas due to the devastating floods, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his shock at the extent of the destruction he witnessed in the state as a result of the recent floods, which left dozens dead and missing. The U.S. president likened the unexpectedly rising water levels to "a giant wave in the Pacific Ocean feared by the best surfers in the world."

The floods resulted in the deaths of 120 people, including 96 in Kerr County, while 130 others remain missing, and search operations continued yesterday.
Among the victims were 27 girls and supervisors who were at a summer camp when they were caught off guard by the flooding of the Guadalupe River.
The authorities in Texas faced sharp criticism regarding their immediate response to the disaster, particularly the delay in issuing emergency evacuation messages to residents and visitors along the Guadalupe River.
However, President Trump and members of his administration defended the performance of local officials, considering that the response was swift.
