In a move that stirs speculation and opens the door for debate, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he will issue a "significant announcement" regarding Russia next Monday, although he did not disclose the nature or content of the anticipated announcement.
In a brief interview with NBC News, Trump said on Thursday evening: "I think I will make a significant announcement regarding Russia on Monday," refusing to elaborate further.
These remarks came days after Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has been a contentious issue for him since his presidency, as he faced both domestic and international criticism regarding his positions towards the Kremlin.
During his campaign for the last presidential election, the U.S. President reiterated his promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours if he returned to the White House, but he did not provide clear details on how he would achieve that.
Russia has been waging war in Ukraine since February 2022, resulting in widespread destruction and thousands of casualties, while the United States and NATO countries continue to support Kyiv militarily and politically in its confrontation with Moscow, amid increasing tensions in relations between Washington and the Kremlin.
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated today (Friday) that he outlined President Vladimir Putin's position on resolving the Ukraine war during a meeting with his American counterpart on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Lavrov told Russian media: "We discussed the issue of Ukraine. We confirmed the position outlined by President Putin, including during his phone call on July 3 with President Trump."
He added that Moscow will take into account the militarization of Europe in all areas of planning, pointing to the military approach taken by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the signs of "increasing Nazism in Europe," according to him.
Lavrov noted that the Korean Peninsula continues to experience significant tension, warning of the possibility of a major conflict in the region, and considered that the United States and its allies continue to provoke North Korea.
