The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, announced on Monday that his country has delivered its response to the paper from U.S. envoy Thomas Barak, emphasizing that Beirut wants to regain control over the decision of war and peace and to limit the possession of arms.
Salam stated: "The paper from U.S. envoy Thomas Barak stipulates the simultaneous withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territories and the limitation of arms, as well as the identification of the entities authorized to carry arms," indicating that the limitation of arms is not new and that Lebanon has failed to implement it since the Taif Agreement.
The Lebanese Prime Minister said: "The limitation of arms and the consolidation of state authority is something the Lebanese have agreed upon since the Taif Agreement," adding: "Hezbollah remains committed to the Taif Agreement and the recent ceasefire agreement."
He pointed out that Hezbollah is part of the Lebanese state, and all of its deputies approved the ministerial statement.
For his part, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, the special envoy of President Donald Trump on the Syrian file, stated: "Trump believes that Lebanon is still the key to peace in the region," indicating that "Lebanon cannot lag behind the wave of change, and Hezbollah is a Lebanese problem with no solution from abroad."
Sources revealed to "Voice of Lebanon" radio that the atmosphere is positive and that Aoun handed envoy Barak Lebanese ideas for a comprehensive solution, which include 7 pages with points that were explained, to be studied by Barak with his team and to return with answers as soon as possible.
Barak had previously presented during his visit to Beirut on June 19 a plan that calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah within a maximum period of 4 months, in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from several locations in southern Lebanon and the cessation of Israeli airstrikes. According to Western media, Lebanon formed a committee to draft a response to the American proposals, while it was agreed that "Hezbollah" would submit its comments to the Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri, who is responsible for coordinating the official Lebanese response, coinciding with Barak's visit to Beirut that took place today.
