Amid escalating tensions between the former allies, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of relying heavily on government subsidies and the "electric vehicle mandate," and forcing people to buy this type of car.
Trump said in a post on his platform "Truth Social": The government efficiency administration should have examined the support that Musk's companies received. He announced that America would save a fortune if we didn't launch satellites and produce electric cars. He emphasized that Musk would likely close his factories and return to South Africa without this support.
Trump mentioned that Musk "probably receives more support than any person in history, by a large margin," stressing that Musk's giant companies like "Tesla and SpaceX" would not be able to survive "and would not launch a single rocket or satellite or produce a single electric car" without this support.
In a sharp tone, the U.S. president said: "If he didn't have that, he would have closed his shop and returned to South Africa," in a clear reference to Musk's origins.
Trump's attack was not limited to the financial aspect but extended to include the "electric vehicle mandate," which he referred to as "a key part of my campaign." While Trump viewed "electric cars as good, he believes that not everyone should be forced to own one."
This position reflects Trump's effort to attract a broad electoral base, especially those who may feel pressured by environmental policies or who work in traditional industries linked to fossil fuels. In doing so, he shows his rejection of legislation that he considers coercive and that limits individual choice.
Trump hinted at "DOGE," questioning: Maybe "DOGE" should seriously consider the subsidies given to Musk, saying: A fortune could be saved!
In his first response to this attack, billionaire Elon Musk said: "Stop all support for my companies now." He considered through his account on the platform X that "raising the debt ceiling is the only way to force the government to reduce waste and fraud."
Musk saw that the legislation regarding the debt ceiling was put in place for this purpose and wondered: What is the point of the debt ceiling if we continue to raise it?
Musk concluded his tweets by saying: "All I ask is that America does not go bankrupt," in a clear reference to the need for strict financial measures to maintain economic stability.
