Sixteen Pakistani soldiers were killed and 29 others injured, including 19 civilians, in a suicide attack targeting a military convoy today (Saturday) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest of the country.
Security sources reported that the attack is one of the deadliest operations targeting the army in recent months. A government official in the region, who requested anonymity, stated that "a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a convoy of army personnel as it was passing through a mountainous area," resulting in a large number of casualties. He said that the convoy was on a routine mission to reinforce military positions near the border with Afghanistan when it was targeted at a precise time indicating prior planning.
This attack represents the latest episode in a series of operations that have escalated recently in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province that has long been a weak link in Pakistan's national security due to its complex terrain and tribal composition, as well as its proximity to troubled areas within Afghanistan. The Pakistani Taliban is often blamed for such attacks.
Since last year, the Pakistani government has launched intensive military operations against armed cells, particularly in Waziristan, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; however, these operations have not succeeded in eliminating the threats.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is an open battleground between the Pakistani state and terrorist organizations that consider the overthrow of the government a strategic goal, complicating the security and political situation amid a volatile regional environment.
