The spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior, Nour al-Din Al-Baba, revealed today (Tuesday) new details about the ISIS terrorist cell involved in the bombing of St. Elias Church in the Douala neighborhood of Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of 27 people and injuries to dozens, clarifying that the cell is affiliated with ISIS and has no connection to any advocacy groups.
Al-Baba announced in a press conference that the members of the terrorist cell came from the Al-Hol camp, explaining that the confession of one of the arrested individuals provided precise information during the investigation about the locations of the other members of the cell and their hideouts, which allowed for a series of raids that resulted in the arrest of all cell members and the seizure of weapons and explosives in their possession.
He noted that the preliminary investigation results indicate that the terrorist cell is officially affiliated with the "ISIS" organization and has no ties to advocacy or local groups, and it is led by a Syrian named Muhammad Abd al-Ilah al-Jumaili, nicknamed "Abu Imad al-Jumaili," who was known by the title "Wali of the Desert" within the organization, and is a resident of the Al-Hajar Al-Aswad area south of Damascus. His confessions will be published once the ongoing investigations are completed.
Regarding the suicide bombers who carried out the operation, the spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior said: the suicide bomber who executed the explosion inside St. Elias Church, and the other suicide bomber who was arrested before carrying out his operation, are both non-Syrians, having arrived in Damascus via the Syrian desert coming from the Al-Hol camp, with the assistance of al-Jumaili, exploiting the security vacuum that followed the liberation of the capital. He indicated that after monitoring and cross-referencing field information with technical evidence, the security services were able to identify the suspect who transported the first suicide bomber to the church, and subsequently pinpoint his location.
Al-Baba added: During the arrest operation, special task forces engaged with two individuals, which led to neutralizing the driver of the motorcycle that transported the first suicide bomber, while the second individual was injured, later revealing that the driver was the same person who was transporting the second suicide bomber to the Sayyida Zainab shrine to carry out the explosion.
Al-Baba confirmed that the arrested suicide bomber revealed the location of the hideout from which the cell operated, which was raided, leading to the arrest of Abu Imad al-Jumaili, who in turn directed the forces to four additional hideouts and warehouses of weapons and explosives belonging to the organization, all of which were raided, resulting in the arrest of other individuals and the thwarting of a new bombing involving a motorcycle that was intended to target civilians in Damascus.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Interior is working on parallel security and social tracks to confront attempts by the ISIS terrorist organization to create security gaps through carrying out terrorist operations aimed at destabilizing security and stability in the country, reaffirming the ministry's commitment to protecting Syrians.
He emphasized that the security services will remain "the shield and sword of the people," while Syria will continue to be a land of tolerance and brotherhood and a beacon of civilization, and that terrorism will find nothing in it but what thwarts its evil. He announced that the ministry will reveal more details related to the cell at a later time.
Today, Syrians mourned the victims of the bombing from the Cross Church in the Al-Qasaa neighborhood of Damascus, amidst a massive public attendance, which included a funeral mass attended by Christian clergy, the victims' families, and residents of Damascus, as well as social, popular, and official figures participating in the funeral, which took place under strict security measures.
