أدان الأمين العام لجامعة الدول العربية أحمد أبو الغيط بشدة التفجير الإرهابي غير المسبوق الذي استهدف كنيسة مار الياس بدمشق، معربا عن تعازيه لأسر الضحايا والمصابين ومواساته للحكومة والشعب السوري.
ونقل المتحدث باسم الأمين العام جمال رشدي قلق الجامعة العربية البالغ من هذا التطور الجديد والذي يمثل استهدافاً للمدنيين في إحدى دور العبادة وما قد يترتب عليه من تداعيات سلبية على الأمن والاستقرار في سورية.
وأشار في هذا السياق إلى الخطورة التي لا تزال تمثلها التنظيمات الإرهابية ولا سيما تنظيم داعش من حيث تزايد مخاطرها بفعل حالات الفوضى والانعدام الأمني، معربا عن الأمل في أن تتمكن الحكومة السورية من التصدي لهذه التنظيمات الإرهابية وغيرها ممن يستهدفون السلم الأهلي في سورية والإقليم.
وأكد المتحدث تضامن الجامعة العربية مع سورية حكومة وشعبا، ودعمها لجهود تحقيق المسار الانتقالي السلمي الذي يحفظ حقوق جميع أبناء الشعب السوري ويحقق طموحاته في الاستقرار والتنمية.
وهز تفجير انتحاري كنيسة مار إلياس للروم الأرثوذكس في حي الدويلعة بالعاصمة السورية دمشق، يوم الأحد، مما أسفر عن سقوط عشرات الضحايا من المدنيين، بينهم نساء وأطفال، ووفقًا لتقارير وزارة الصحة السورية، بلغت الحصيلة 22 قتيلاً و59 جريحًا، مع توقعات بارتفاع الأعداد بسبب خطورة الإصابات.
ووقع الهجوم أثناء إقامة قداس مسائي، حيث اقتحم انتحاري يرتدي حزامًا ناسفًا الكنيسة، وبدأ بإطلاق النار عشوائيًا قبل أن يفجّر نفسه، مما تسبب في دمار كبير داخل المبنى وفي المباني المحيطة، في حين أعلنت وزارة الداخلية السورية أن الهجوم نفّذه عنصر يتبع تنظيم «داعش» الإرهابي، مشيرة إلى أن التحقيقات الأولية تؤكد تورط التنظيم في استهداف المدنيين بهدف زعزعة الاستقرار وإثارة الفتنة الطائفية.
ويُعدّ هذا الهجوم الأول من نوعه في دمشق منذ الإطاحة بنظام الرئيس السابق بشار الأسد في 8 ديسمبر الماضي، مما يثير مخاوف من عودة العمليات الإرهابية إلى المناطق التي شهدت استقرارًا نسبيًا.
تُعتبر كنيسة مار إلياس واحدة من أقدم الكنائس في دمشق، وتحمل مكانة روحية وتاريخية كبيرة للطائفة المسيحية في سورية، وتقع في حي الدويلعة، المعروف بتنوعه الديني والثقافي، مما يجعل استهدافها يحمل دلالات رمزية تهدف إلى تقويض التعايش الديني والسلم الأهلي في البلاد.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, strongly condemned the unprecedented terrorist bombing that targeted the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, expressing his condolences to the families of the victims and the injured, and offering his support to the Syrian government and people.
The spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, conveyed the Arab League's deep concern regarding this new development, which represents an attack on civilians in a place of worship and the potential negative repercussions it may have on security and stability in Syria.
In this context, he pointed out the ongoing danger posed by terrorist organizations, particularly ISIS, in terms of the increasing risks due to chaos and insecurity, expressing hope that the Syrian government can confront these terrorist organizations and others that target civil peace in Syria and the region.
The spokesperson affirmed the Arab League's solidarity with Syria, both government and people, and its support for efforts to achieve a peaceful transitional process that preserves the rights of all members of the Syrian people and fulfills their aspirations for stability and development.
An explosive attack shook the Mar Elias Church of the Greek Orthodox in the Douala neighborhood of the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Sunday, resulting in dozens of civilian casualties, including women and children. According to reports from the Syrian Ministry of Health, the toll reached 22 dead and 59 injured, with expectations of rising numbers due to the severity of the injuries.
The attack occurred during an evening mass, where a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt stormed the church and began firing randomly before detonating himself, causing significant destruction inside the building and in the surrounding structures. The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that the attack was carried out by an individual affiliated with the terrorist organization "ISIS," noting that initial investigations confirm the organization's involvement in targeting civilians with the aim of destabilizing the situation and inciting sectarian strife.
This attack is the first of its kind in Damascus since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8 of last year, raising fears of a return of terrorist operations to areas that had experienced relative stability.
Mar Elias Church is considered one of the oldest churches in Damascus and holds significant spiritual and historical importance for the Christian community in Syria. It is located in the Douala neighborhood, known for its religious and cultural diversity, making its targeting carry symbolic implications aimed at undermining religious coexistence and civil peace in the country.
