As the warnings of escalating tensions spreading to more countries increase, the official Lebanese positions reaffirm a renewed commitment to the policy of disassociation and adherence to the higher national interest as a shield against an increasingly fierce regional storm.
In this context, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that Lebanon, its leadership, parties, and people, are more aware today than ever that they have paid a heavy price for the wars that have erupted on their land and in the region.
Aoun emphasized that the country is unwilling to pay more, and there is no national interest in doing so, especially since the cost of these wars has been and will remain greater than Lebanon's ability to endure. He called for restraint and the initiation of constructive negotiations to restore stability to the countries of the region and to avoid further killing and destruction.
For his part, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam considered that "in the face of the serious escalation in military operations and the risks of their repercussions on the entire region, our strict adherence to the higher national interest becomes increasingly important," affirming that this awareness "is our most effective weapon in these delicate circumstances."
Aoun and Salam held a phone call today (Sunday) to discuss the regional developments and their potential implications for Lebanon, agreeing to keep communication channels open and to cooperate to prioritize the higher national interest and maintain internal unity.
With this official approach, state institutions appear to be in a state of diplomatic and security alert, aiming to avoid any direct repercussions on the Lebanese interior, amid public fears that the escalating regional conflict may affect the fragile situation in Lebanon politically, security-wise, and economically.
