The White House is studying the possibility of holding a meeting this week between U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Wittekov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Axios reported from four American sources that the goal of the meeting between Wittekov and Araghchi is to discuss an initiative to reach a nuclear agreement and end the war between Israel and Iran.

According to the sources, the meeting has not been finalized, but it is part of President Donald Trump's last-ditch effort to avoid war and return to making deals.

A senior U.S. official considered that the meeting could be a decisive turning point in whether the United States will join the war to eliminate the Iranian nuclear program militarily, as Trump believes that the massive bunker buster bombs needed to destroy the underground enrichment facility in Fordow—which the U.S. possesses and Israel does not—are a key pressure point to push Iran into making a deal.

The official described the decision on the bunker buster bombs as a "turning point," stating that Trump "thinks in terms of deals and leverage. And this is leverage." He added, "They really want to talk. But what we don’t know is: Were they forced to completely concede to realize that in order to have a state, they have to talk? And assuming they get there, is there any level of enrichment they are allowed?"

It is worth noting that Trump has so far refused to directly participate in Israeli attacks on Iran, but he has made it clear that Iran must be prevented from obtaining a nuclear weapon one way or another.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pressuring Washington to join the war and bomb Fordow, Trump continues to insist on his belief in his ability to strike a deal with Iran.
