أفصح مسؤول سوري سابق أن الصحفي الأمريكي أوستن تايس، الذي اختفى في أغسطس 2012 قرب دمشق، قُتل عام 2013 بناء على تعليمات من الرئيس المخلوع بشار الأسد.
وأبلغ مستشار الرئيس السابق للشؤون الإستراتيجية بسام الحسن، مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي، أن تايس قُتل بناء على أوامر الأسد، في رواية لم تؤكدها الولايات المتحدة، لكنها تمثل المرة الأولى التي يتحدث فيها مسؤول كبير في نظام الأسد إلى مسؤولين أمريكيين حول مصير تايس، بحسب ما نقلت صحيفة «واشنطن بوست».
وأفاد الحسن خلال تحقيقات أجراها معه مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي (أف بي آي) ووكالة المخابرات المركزية (CIA) في بيروت على مدار عدة أيام في أبريل الماضي، بحضور مسؤولين لبنانيين، أن الأسد أمره بقتل تايس، فيما حاول ثنيه دون جدوى ذلك، وفقاً لمسؤولين أمريكيين. وكشف أن تايس قُتل على يد مرؤوس له، عام 2013.
وحسب مسؤولين أمريكيين، فإن الأمر صدر في وقت ما بعد هروب تايس لفترة وجيزة من زنزانته في السجن.
وقال الحسن إنه نصح الأسد بعدم قتل الصحفي الأمريكي، لافتاً إلى إمكانية استخدامه كوسيلة ضغط على الولايات المتحدة، وأنه أكثر قيمة حياً منه ميتاً.
وشككت مصادر أمريكية في ما إذا كان الحسن قد حاول بالفعل ردع الأسد. ورجحت أنه كان يحاول «التنصل من مسؤوليته»، وأن الجزء الأول من روايته حول أمر الأسد بقتل تايس يبدو «موثوقاً».
من جانبه، اعترض مارك تايس، والد أوستن، بشدة على تلك المزاعم، وأكد أن الحسن «قاتل جماعي أنكر العديد من الأفعال التي يُعرف أنه ارتكبها». وأكد أنه لا يعتبر أياً من أقواله حقيقية بل مجرد محاولة للنفاذ بجلده.
وأكد الوالد أن العائلة تعتقد أن ابنها لا يزال على قيد الحياة، استناداً إلى شهادات أشخاص تقدموا على مر السنين قائلين إنهم رأوا أوستن في السجن بسورية في السنوات التي تلت عام 2013.
إلا أن أياً من تلك المشاهدات المزعومة لم تقدم دليلاً قاطعاً على أن أوستن على قيد الحياة، وفقاً لمسؤولين أمريكيين.
وجاءت تلك المعلومات بعد أن حصل مسؤولون أمريكيون خلال السنوات الماضية على وثيقة وزعت على السلطات الأمنية السورية آنذاك لتوخي الحذر بشأن تايس. وقالوا إن هذا الإشعار أو الوثيقة صدرت في أواخر أكتوبر 2012 -وهو تاريخ لم يُكشف عنه علناً من قبل- ما يشير إلى أن الصحفي حاول في تلك الفترة الهروب من سجنه. واعتُبر الإشعار دليلاً على أن الحكومة السورية احتجزته، على الرغم من نفيها الرسمي.
وكان عملاء مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي أخبروا والدي تايس، مارك وديبرا، في أبريل الماضي، أنهم أجروا مقابلة مع الحسن، وقدموا لهما ملخصاً عن الحوار، وفقاً لعائلة تايس.
A former Syrian official revealed that American journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared in August 2012 near Damascus, was killed in 2013 on the orders of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
The former president's strategic affairs advisor, Bassam al-Hassan, informed the FBI that Tice was killed on Assad's orders, in a narrative that has not been confirmed by the United States, but represents the first time a senior official in Assad's regime has spoken to American officials about Tice's fate, according to the Washington Post.
Al-Hassan stated during investigations conducted by the FBI and the CIA in Beirut over several days last April, in the presence of Lebanese officials, that Assad ordered him to kill Tice, while he unsuccessfully tried to dissuade him, according to American officials. He revealed that Tice was killed by one of his subordinates in 2013.
According to American officials, the order was issued sometime after Tice briefly escaped from his prison cell.
Al-Hassan said he advised Assad not to kill the American journalist, noting that he could be used as leverage against the United States, and that he was more valuable alive than dead.
American sources expressed skepticism about whether al-Hassan actually tried to deter Assad. They suggested he was trying to "dissociate himself from responsibility," and that the first part of his account regarding Assad's order to kill Tice seemed "credible."
For his part, Mark Tice, Austin's father, strongly objected to these claims, asserting that al-Hassan is a "mass murderer who has denied many of the acts he is known to have committed." He emphasized that he does not consider any of al-Hassan's statements to be true, but rather an attempt to save himself.
The father confirmed that the family believes their son is still alive, based on testimonies from individuals over the years claiming they saw Austin in a Syrian prison in the years following 2013.
However, none of these alleged sightings provided conclusive evidence that Austin is alive, according to American officials.
This information came after American officials obtained a document over the past years that was distributed to Syrian security authorities at the time, advising caution regarding Tice. They stated that this notice or document was issued in late October 2012 - a date that had not been publicly disclosed before - indicating that the journalist attempted to escape from his prison during that period. The notice was considered evidence that the Syrian government was holding him, despite its official denial.
FBI agents informed Tice's parents, Mark and Debra, last April that they had interviewed al-Hassan and provided them with a summary of the conversation, according to the Tice family.
