The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Major General Hossein Salami, who was assassinated by Israel today (Friday), is one of the most prominent military leaders close to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, known for his sharp speeches and statements against Israel and the West.
According to the "Tasnim" agency, Khamenei appointed General Mohammad Pakpour as the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, who was born in 1961 in Arak.
Last month, Salami warned Israel and the United States against any attack on Iran, stating: "If you make the slightest mistake, we will open the gates of hell upon you."
Salami was born in 1960 and regularly appeared at celebrations and on television screens delivering fiery speeches, echoing the biting verbal attacks launched by officials against Israel.
He is from the first generation of the Revolutionary Guard, which was established at the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), and spent most of his career within its ranks. Salami previously served as the commander of the air force of the Revolutionary Guard.
He held the position of deputy commander for 9 years, then was appointed commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in April 2019, succeeding Mohammad Ali Jafari, during a period of significant changes made by Iranian authorities in the leadership of the organization.
The Iranian state television previously broadcast footage of Salami issuing orders via phone from a military command center to the Revolutionary Guard forces to launch an operation against Israel during the Iranian drone and missile attack in mid-April 2024, which was the first of its kind.
One of his most notable statements in 2018 was his invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "practice swimming in the Mediterranean Sea"; because he might be forced to flee his country.
