The release of dozens of officers and soldiers from Bashar al-Assad's regime has been met with widespread criticism on social media, with many asserting that the officers of the former president's regime "have blood on their hands." The Supreme Committee for National Reconciliation and Justice quickly responded by confirming that the officers were released after it was established that they were not involved in the bloodshed of Syrians.
Committee member Hassan Soufan announced at a press conference today, Tuesday, at the Ministry of Information in the capital Damascus, that transitional justice does not mean holding accountable everyone who served the regime, but rather holding accountable the major criminals who committed serious crimes and violations. He confirmed that the detainees underwent investigations and no charges of war crimes were proven against them.
Soufan stated that their continued imprisonment does not serve a national interest and lacks legal legitimacy, according to the Syrian news agency "SANA."
He clarified that the released officers have been "active" since 2021 and voluntarily surrendered at the Iraqi border and in the Al-Sukhnah area as part of what is known as the state of trust.
For his part, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Nour al-Din al-Baba, announced that 450,000 people engaged in fighting alongside the regime's militias against the Syrians. Al-Baba revealed that 123,000 individuals were affiliated with the Ministry of Interior during the fallen regime, many of whom were involved in crimes against the people.
He pointed out that many hostile countries to Syria are seeking to undermine national reconciliation.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara renewed in April his call for remnants of the former regime to surrender themselves and their weapons before it is too late. He noted that these elements sought to test the new Syria, which they do not know, referring to the attacks carried out by forces affiliated with the Assad regime against public security in the Syrian coast in early March, which resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Since the new authorities took power following the fall of the previous regime on December 8, they have called on soldiers and officers who have not been involved in crimes to surrender their weapons and head to the "reconciliation centers" established in various areas.
Security forces have carried out several search and sweep operations in various areas in search of former officers and soldiers accused of war crimes.
