In one of the largest escape operations, more than 200 prisoners escaped from a prison in Karachi, southern Pakistan, late last night after being allowed to leave their cells following a series of earthquakes. The prison is located in a poor residential and industrial neighborhood in the Malir area of Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan.
Justice Minister of Sindh, Ziaul Hassan Langah, told reporters at the scene that hundreds of prisoners were allowed to exit to the prison yard due to the earthquakes.
He added, "Panic ensued here due to the earthquakes," noting that it was difficult to control a crowd of up to 1,000 people. He reported that the escape began just before midnight on Monday and continued into the early hours of Tuesday morning. Langah described the incident as one of the largest escape operations in Pakistan's history.
For their part, police sources clarified that the prisoners seized weapons from the prison guards, leading to an exchange of gunfire, and then stormed the main gate.
Sindh Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon announced that most of the prisoners are accused of minor crimes such as drug addiction. He added that the exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of at least one prisoner and the injury of three prison staff members.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah revealed that about 80 prisoners have been captured so far, adding that allowing the prisoners to leave their cells was a mistake. He warned the escaped prisoners that they would face serious charges due to their escape unless they surrender. He added, "Minor crimes will turn into major cases like terrorism."
